You should try it. Because in 1957 (which I think was the original date), no lady went girdle-free. And if you don't want to find a vintage girdle, you can approximate it with modern waist cinchers. I am thinking about investing in a modern cincher because while the corset works great, it's not really easy to dress myself. It is sort of a hilarious conflict in my head between oppressive underwear and a love of vintage.

I have a vintage-esque girdle. It's new, but still totally a girdle. I bought it from Girlde Bound (www.girdlebound.com) which while clearly has a fetishy element, sells old school girdles and shapers galore. Also they're really helpful about sizing.
