I highly suggest this post to all to read. Fairly trenchant observation on the violent nature of American culture and the general inability to realize the potential root cause of the killings at VA Tech when mourning. Imomus argues that we live in a society which glorifies violence and which attaches such symbolic resonance to guns that they ( Read more... )

I think violence is a problem. and our mass availability to the constant exposure of it, huge, yes.
But nations have been praisers of "the sword" for thousands of years.
My hardly-formulated theory is that
we do not appreicate survival anymore
survival is no longer a challenge. We don't care if we live or if others live. There is hardly a fight.
While humanitarianism is growing, so is the fault, and hate for fellow humans rises as well.
But with more population, so come a wider array of opinions and feelings, as well... psychopathologies.
I hate to be a realistic downer.
But over-population, desensitivity to life being precious, and the passing of time is definitely at the root.
pretty out of control

I think that humanitarianism is also a pathological response to the current state of the world. People whose life is precious- those who benefit from economic stability and high standards of living which brings a welcomed sense of security- are the ones who participate in humanitarian activities. They provide aid to others who are suffering. They engage in charitable acts to help those less fortunate and (although they won't admit it or even be aware of it) to assuage their guilt. They are "saving" Darfur, "fighting" aids, "stopping" hunger and feeling great about it because with only a small amount of thought and a simple donation they are solving all these huge problems! But isn't it pathological (help me with psych terminology here) to feel like your solving problems by addressing the results and not the root causes?
