I've been absent for a while on a mental non-holiday, which always means that things pile up when I come limping back. A lot has happened this week. This entry is only going to touch on a very few things.

oo1. As some of you have probably (hopefully) heard by now, Very Bad Things Have Been Happening in Jena, Louisiana. I learned of this abominable ( Read more... )

racism, lj, current events, jena six, unfriending, fandom migration, livejournal removal amnesty

I think you're absolutely right about other sites. If they're put under pressure, I think they'll respond exactly as lj did. It's the nature of corporations to want to cover their asses, and I can't really blame them, even if I think they were extraordinarily idiotic in how they did it. And frankly, I can't defend the sexualizing of children, so it's not breaking my heart that they took action.

I have mixed feelings about the fanwork that is under fire, so I can't really address that, but I do think that LJ/Six Apart has done a terrible job of communicating during this whole debacle. I won't hesitate to criticize them on that, and I find it strange that they have yet to (apparently) change the TOS to reflect the new policies, which is what one would think should be done under the circumstances. I do think that users/customers have a right to be told in no uncertain terms what is and is not acceptable, and that has yet to happen (they have issued far too many contradictory statements to inspire any confidence). So I do think that LJ has failed spectacularly in its customer service.

And yet, I honestly don't think that any other service will do a better job or ultimately be more permissive (unless the servers were truly fan-run/owned). Which is a sad prospect, considering.

LJ frustrates me to no end, and I have contemplated moving. But everything is here, all my memories and friends and such, so I don't think much about moving anymore. =)

Me, too. As long as you guys are still here, and I'm still engaged in being here and doing my thing: I'm not going anywhere.

The whole situation in Jena, LA is a nightmare that seems inconceivable in 2007. I'm glad I could do a little to shed some light on such things.

And yes, there's an upheaval in fandom, and I honestly don't blame those who want to leave - LJ/Six Apart is being colossally stupid, but I don't think anyone else is going to be LESS stupid, so here I'll stay.

Well, I'm certainly not going anywhere for the time being, so I'm afraid you're stuck with me, dear! ;)

Best news EVER! :D

Oh god, that NPR article was beyond horrifying. I'm living with my aunt and uncle right now and they don't watch the news so I've been pretty cut off. I feel rather ignorant right now, hopefully your journal will help me to read more of the news since I'm usually too lazy to without prodding. The writer of that article was very good though, it was so raw and painful to read, he really did the topic justice.

And about LJ, how big is the fandom migration? I know some people have left, but most people close to me are too attached to leave, so. LJ is like home to me though, so many wonderful people are on it.

Well, don't feel too bad: the story of Jena, LA has barely been reported in any major media outlet.

And about LJ, how big is the fandom migration?

I really have no idea. Of the polls I've seen, the percentage of people who are definitely leaving, or who have already left, is relatively small. And I don't blame them for wanting to leave when LJ/Six Apart has done such a poor job at providing answers to legitimate concerns.

LJ is like home to me though, so many wonderful people are on it.

Which is why I'm not going anywhere. And unless there is something objectionable in my fanfic, I don't produce controversial content (at least I don't think I do), so I should be "safe." If that changes, then I now know that fandom is working on options outside of LJ.

*Sigh* My soul feels so crushed when I see things like this article. I cannot believ this isstill the world we live in in 2007... mindless HATE is so depressing. I will have to check the links again but you had mentioned there was something we could do. What was it you were mentioning?

It's horrifying to discover that things like Jena are still going on in the U.S. We've learned...a little. Not enough, obviously.

If you click on the words "yes, you can help" they take you to the NAACP who has a list of things you can do including a form letter than you can send to your congressperson.
