Prince Stéphane reaches the deep, dark lake at the edge of the deep, dark forest on the last full moon of summer. He has been traveling for many weeks, through two cycles of the moon, since leaving the court of his father in the service of what he considers little more than a whim

The song he plays is very old, a classic in his kingdom. There are lyrics to go with it, the legend of a snake that chased the moon out of the sky, so that night never came and all the crops died and the people suffered greatly, until a valiant prince went into the mountains and coaxed the moon to take its rightful place once more. Although he's never been much of a singer, Stéphane tries his best, closing his eyes and nodding to keep the time

This is so good! I love Stéphane as a prince. Being gentle and kind and a talented musician and giving Johnny his fur and caring for him. I love the mention of Sleeping Beauty and that Stéphane's horse is called Ladybug.

OF COURSE HE'S A DESCENDANT FROM SLEEPING BEAUTY.

I loved it so far, authoranon. The writing style makes it all feel very ethereal, which is perfect for a fairytale. Can't wait for more. :D

Stéphane leads Ladybug away from the high road and down an overgrown path deeper into the forest, tugging gently at the reins. He pulls out the map his father gave him, and surveys it -- although this track isn't shown, the castle he'd glimpsed from the water's edge is with the icon of a crown. Surely they must know how a young man came to be enchanted in their lake
