Jack ran, stumbling in his haste. He ran through the nameless forest towards the sea, but at the same time he ran through the corridors of the Game Station, and when his foot slipped, sometimes it slipped on wet moss and sometimes on a pile of Dalek dust; sometimes it wasn't his foot but someone else's, someone who wasn't human enough to run on two legs at all. It didn't matter, though, because it was all the same running and underneath it was the same screaming horror and disbelieving grief: No! I'm being left behind, I can't be, he won't . . . .

So heartrending, this is. (I sound like Yoda at this hour of the night here, huh?)

The past couldn't be forgotten but it could be forgiven, as often as necessary. The good news was, it got easier each time.

So much love for this.

Awesomely good, with such vivid descriptions. One thing I love about a lot of your stories is that you often have a strong sci-fi component. Through most of the story I was focussed on Jack's abandonment, having forgotten that he's seen both sides, so you bring it all really nicely together in the end. And I missed the Princess Bride nod (doh!). Thankfully others caught it.

Haunting indeed. And beautiful too. I adore the paralells you pulled. Thank you for this :)

Brilliant! I love what you pointed out about edge effects - I'd never contemplated the fact that Jack grew up on a shoreline, a place where worlds collide, and how that has defined him.

The playing out of old ghosts' grievances reminded me very pleasantly of one of my favorite Buffy episodes, "I Only Have Eyes For You."
