Like the Countess suggested, and having nowhere else to really go, Tom had left the prison and and made his way for Alex and Claire's place. He had been lucky not to bump into anyone on his way, careful to take back streets and stay out of sight, but there was always the danger. He had to explain, he had to tell someone. But really, he had no where else to go. The town was likely to rip him to pieces and throw him up in a tree for the birds for what he had done. Not that he blamed them particularly. If he were amongst them, he'd probably feel the same way.

Eileen perked at the voice, pausing in her attempt to wipe a bookshelf clean of dust with a rolled-up shirt. She hadn’t heard a knock, nor had she heard the door opening, but Tom invited himself in anyway. She exhaled softly and wiped her filmy hands clean, bracing herself to meet him in the front room, hoping her sudden appearance wouldn’t be too much of a shock.

"E-Eileen?"

“That’s me.” She smiled, trying to inject a little levity into the situation. Tom looked almost frightened, and when he didn’t respond right away to Rowen’s bid for attention the dog curled up by Eileen’s feet. She high-stepped over the small mountain of fur and inched closer to Tom, as if to assure him she was really real.

“Surprise.”
