”Eileen, you disappeared. You’ve been gone for months!”
Claire’s words rung in her ears, repeating themselves over and over in rapid succession like a song she couldn’t get out of her head. Eileen had no reason to doubt her best friend, but none of what she said added up. She’d been gone for months. How was that possible? Eileen recalls talking to her just the other evening; she even said goodnight to Henry and Josh who, sadly, had since vanished.
She wasn’t yet feeling well enough to take a walk through World’s End and instead stuck close to home, going from room to room under the ruse that she was picking up clothes and other personal items that had been left laying around, but in reality she was inspecting every square inch of her apartment. Nothing was out of place, as far as Eileen could tell. Everything was in much the same state as it was the night before. However long ago that was.
Rowen followed her closely, whining loudly whenever she stepped out of his sight. She circled her arms around his big soft head and pressed a kiss to his brow.
“Big silly. I’m not leaving you for anything.”
