I would like to be that unnoticed and that necessary

Apr 20, 2009 23:14

I was working on my Fanlore paper, and I made a definitions section because 1) it is meant for a general audience, and 2) it takes up room! So naturally I had fun with that most hallowed tome, the Oxford English Dictionary and especially the usage history (which is probably my favourite part).

'fan' and 'fandom' )

podfic, words, in which i am long-winded, books: oed, poetry month, adventures in aca-fandom, fandom love!, writing: craft, sleep

Hee, baseball fans ftw! Go Dodgers!

Very interesting post, especially about the peripherals. I would be surprised by the idea of a 10% commenting ratio if not for the sites I have my fic archived where the hits are tracked as well as the reviews.

I used to be a Dodgers fan when I was a kid. Back when I actually sort of liked sports. I have since failed my mum, who is a big sports fan.

Sadly, none of my classmates are fen (at least in the participating in fandom way, as I'm sure they've all got TV shows and whatnot they're fans of), so I posted about it for class but no one else will appreciate it. I'm glad you found it interesting! :)

I have to admit I just made my little round through my flist to give some glomps -to keep in touch, and yeah, my name is Nicole and I'm a Random Glomper *GLOMPS*-, but then I saw your post and started reading and this, this is love 'cause it has scientific fact and statistics and general awesomeness.

Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for posting this I found it totally fascinating. Other than Geek fandom (i.e. all things SciFi/Fantasy) my favorite subject is sociology/anthropology/philosophy (I can't ever seem to separate them) so reading a sociological discussion of fandom is the ultimate joy for me :o)

May I friend you? I must admit to being a serial peripheral participant ...

btw: came here on a rec from rasah

EDIT: due to my stoopidity

Yay! New geek friends are always welcome! :)

This is a really awesome class. The class helps me learn more about fandom, and fandom helps me learn more about the class. I'm actually in grad school in Library & Information Science, so I look at things more from the perspective of information flow.

If you follow my "adventures in aca-fandom" tag, you can see my other natterings about my academic fandom pursuits. You'd probably at least be interested in some graphs I did of Fanlore users, [ here] and [ here].

Uh oh, my husband may regret me finding your LJ, every time I read one of your posts it makes me want to read more (just had a total squee when I saw mention of His Dark Materials).

I may have to set aside a few hours to catch up at the weekend!

Hee! I love the HDM books. I wrote my undergrad thesis on them. My degree was in Comparative Literature in English and Spanish, and for my thesis I looked at the relationships between animals and children in HDM and a YA trilogy by Isabel Allende. I think I was the only one who didn't hate her source books at the end of the year. :)

Actually I am using The Golden Compass for another paper this term, in which I am looking at the portrayal of censorship in children's lit.

And my default icon is inspired by the ending of TGC.
