I have been trying to find a good overview of the role of Censors in Ancient Rome. After an hour, my options are 1) an 800-page epic history that I really don't have time to read, or, 2) a Wikipedia article ( Read more... )

The best first place to go for any Classics-related topic is the Oxford Classical Dictionary (3rd ed.). Your school library will def. have a copy. If it'll help, I can look at the article for you and see what bibliography it suggests?

My uni does have a copy, so I will check that out! That will hopefully suffice, as I just need a basic overview to compare to censorship today and need a quotable source for my paper.

Thanks so much for the tip! ♥

Dude, Library Smut is awesome! I clicked on it (because I'd never seen that site before) and then just... stared in longing. Mmmm, libraries, you are so hot. Reminds me that I almost went to Vassar solely based on the fact that their library was gorgeous.

I know! And there's even more at [ Librophiliac Love Letter ]. So many pretties!! I can stare at those gorgeous libraries for hours. *sigh* ♥

A 'proper library' is one of those things that I have deeply-held (and possibly irrational) opinions on. Sigh, my current library is only 'marginally acceptable'.

It is never irrational! At least, not in the land of winkingstar. :)

The professor who explained the study to me said it had come about from a student commenting something along the lines of, "When I go inside one of those old, traditional libraries, I get the same feeling as when I go inside a church" - hence the title of the study, "Libraries as Sacred Spaces". And I said, "Yes yes yes!!" Because there is that delicious feeling of ancient knowledge and awe and books.

I do like the land of winkingstar :)

Sometimes when I go home I visit my favourite library and I feel a slightly different sense of coming-home and something inside me relaxes and sighs and is made happy and content. *hugs libraries*

I think it's quite a nice bit of land, myself. I'm glad you think so, too! :)

Ohhh, I wish I had a "home" library in that sense. All my libraries have tended to be more modern. *sigh* (Oh! Except for a couple small reading rooms at my undergrad school. They weren't in the library proper; they were sort of satellite rooms in another building, tucked away in corners. I did love curling up in their armchairs to read and escape from schoolwork/people/etc.)

At least it's an acceptable thing to be pervy about! ;)

Oh, man, books! And pretty pretty libraries! I think the RIJKMUSEUM AMSTERDAM is my favorite -- so many of them are so gorgeous, but multi-story spiral staircase = WIN.

Yes, that spiral staircase is quite awesome. But I kind of like the look of the one at HANDELINGENKAMER TWEEDE KAMER DER STATEN-GENERAAL DEN HAAG better. Plus, look at that name. Either way, though, I get dizzy just thinking about going down those.

Someday, when I buy a house, I shall have rooms for books. Like, normal people have an office and a family room and dining room and such. But my house will be bathroom, bedrooms, kitchen, and then every other room will be a Library.
