Yes, exactly, they're kids! I like all the characters and they make a great team, but they don't have to be all kissy about it. It's not a requirement that everything have romance.
A++ agreement on the "shipping 12-year-olds is kinda icky" sentiment. I mean, the first thing Aang did when he met Katara (after falling deeply in love with her, I guess) was to ask her to go penguin sledding -- he's a kid! (With good taste in fun activities, to be sure.) And yeah, he grows a lot during the series (and apparently Avatar state = eXtreme muscle mass?), but still: a kid!
Of course, it's clear that their Love That Was Meant To Be had TPTB's seal of approval from the get-go, and okay, if that's integral to the fabric of the show, then fine, whatever, that's cool. But I can't help but imagine an AU where, after the war, everyone remembers that Aang's a monk, and that he's got a spiritual journey that involves not being so attached to things of the physical world, and the whole motherly vibe of Katara's is played up a bit more, and they're very deeply friends, but not so much with the making out. And while I'm at it, Katara and Zuko end up together because they're awesome ninja friends, and yes, I originally only

You know, I kind of lean towards Katara/Zuko, too. I missed their allegedly shippy moments from the end of season 2 (which I still haven't managed to see; I got hooked after S2 was over, see, and they only ever showed reruns from S1 and the first half of S2), but I liked their interactions at the end of S3. They made a good team, and I think they'd have a lot better chance at romance than their current partners. Mai is still very blah, and she didn't ever do anything very demonstrative of her love for Zuko (Boiling Rock, yeah, but only sort of, and she wasn't at all helpful when he was banished). Katara, for all that she's a waterbender, she has a very fiery personality, which I just don't see going well with Aang. They make good friends, but they don't balance each other correctly for a romance. She and Zuko, on the other hand, would balance out nicely.
And yay, you like Psych! :D For the longest time, everyone I mentioned it to had either never heard of it or (inexplicably) hated it. So, yes, get watching again!
How can anyone hate Psych? Do those people hate fun, too? Madness!
If you're looking to catch up on Avatar (or any show, really), google "project free tv" -- it's a fantastic replacement to the old tvlinks.co.uk site, and what Mary and I used to watch all three seasons (minus the last six or so). Somewhat legally dubious, but what on the Internet isn't? :-)
