Avatar: The Last Airbender Series Finale ~ I was totally on board with the finale up until the last half hour, at which point it kind of felt too rushed and vague, and there had better be more because there are still questions. (I mean, seriously, Zuko asked about his mother and then they didn't show us. He's calmly serving tea in the next scene!)
I also wasn't thrilled with the pairings. It's not a show I ever felt a strong shipping vibe for because, you know, they're kids, so to have them paired off like that doesn't sit too well with me. The only ones I'd believe could last in a serious relationship at this point are Sokka and Suki. But for the rest, I agree with
lacontessa11's assessment that their "personalities just don't go together". Zuko/Mai, we didn't really see much of their relationship and what we did see wasn't terribly impressive for epic love. And Aang/Katara are too different; he's laid-back and fun, and she's loud and overbearing. (Which is not to say I don't like them all lots.) Mostly, though, I wish they'd done a "5 Years Later" or something so I wasn't as uncomfortable about young teens making out and pledging eternal love.
But other than that last half hour, I really really liked the finale! The fights were great! I always like how Sokka gets to use his brains in a fight since he doesn't have 'bending skills. But I especially loved the contrast between Aang and Ozai's fiery rock-hurling battle and the slow choreography of Zuko and Azula's agni kai. (Also, Azula? Totally freaky!!) And the music, so cool.
Oh! I did like that Uncle Iroh gets his teashop! :) So the last half hour wasn't entirely bad.
*sniff* I miss Avatar already.
Psych (3x01 "Ghosts") ~ Oh, I love this show so much, it's so fun! Mostly, this is just a fun show for me to watch when I need a laugh or a glimpse of my hometown, but now they've added a slightly more serious storyline with the return of Shawn's mother, so now I'm all ponderous about that backstory. I'd had the impression that his mom had left earlier in his childhood than his senior year of high school, so I went back and rewatched the pilot episode. :D (Which, incidentally, guest-starred Don S. Davis, aww, and Christopher Heyerdahl, hee. (I started watching Psych before I got sucked into Stargate Atlantis.)) They'd kept the backstory vague enough that they didn't have to do too much retcon, but the math still doesn't quite add up.
So in "Ghosts", we had the flashback to 1995 when Shawn got arrested by his dad (ooh, and they mentioned that incident in the pilot episode!). But according to his
resume on the series website, Shawn graduated from high school in 1994. I would have thought he would have split as soon as he graduated since he didn't get along with his dad and blamed him for his mom leaving, which apparently happened during his senior year. But whatever, I guess he left town after his dad arrested him. In the pilot, though, Shawn alluded to having left town to help his mom with her divorce. So the timeline doesn't quite add up.
I think I may think about these things too much. :>
But I am still curious as to why he thought his mom was so awesome. I mean, if he was a teenager when she left, I would have thought he'd be old enough to understand that sometimes both people and/or neither person is to blame. And then when he was on the phone with Gus while hiding in his room, he mentioned that he hadn't seen his mom in three years and that she used to tell him everything, keywords: used to, so they haven't talked as much lately? That scene at the end of the episode was sad, when she was telling him that she's the one who left, and he looks out and sees his dad. Aww. ♥ I am looking forward to more of this backstory, though it looks like his mom's only in one other episode for the the first half of the season.
Oh, I also watched the
video commentary for "Ghosts" by Steve Franks, in which he doesn't say anything terribly helpful for sorting out the backstory, but in which he does discuss pineapples (from which I got this entry's title). Embrace the pineapple! :D
