This has happened to me numerous times now and it's confused me every time

I think it must partially be due to the "sock"... people seem to find it inconceivable that someone would knit a sock for an adult. On Tuesday a guy asked me if I was making a mitten. (I hadn't yet reached the heel, so it could conceivably been a mitten.) I said that it was a sock. He then asked if it was for my child or a friend's child. :P
