Sorry to say, I'm not surprised either. I hear so many deplorable street musicians in my area (they are mostly just beggars playing something), that I always stop to listen to someone who's actually talented and throw in a dollar or so.

Some cities, I can't remember if it's Toronto or Montreal, actually hold auditions. You can't play in the metro unless you're qualified, so to speak. And I've heard incredible things. I remember a flute player making chills run up and down my spine in the space of time it took me to go up an escalator, and wanting to slow down and listen as the music melted into the distance.

I think this goes farther though: I don't think most of us are even aware of what we're seeing or hearing most of the time, and I don't think we could remember it all later. It would be interesting to do a study.

Well, and when we're in public places, there's just so much noise! Music coming out of different stores or buildings, the muffled sound coming from other people's headphones, background elevator music of sorts. It all tends to blend together and sometimes you have to block your mind from the intruding chaos of sound.

Ha! It's true! I don't think I've seen that before, but since you're probably at work and potentially bored, and I'm working through this mess of papers and need to take frequent breaks, I guess we both experienced such things as the need to comment simultaneously! :)
