OOC: The State of Olympus

Mar 30, 2008 12:28

Hay guys!

Okay. SO. As we are a rather large fandom here - one which has just undergone a pretty huge resurgence in the bar - I thought it might be a good idea to put this up. (And I figure I'll repost it to our plotting comm if/when it gets made.)

A little while ago we had an information-gathering post regarding what's going on with our pups and ( Read more... )

I've been playing it that way, too; Epimetheus goes back to the old country very, very occasionally, to visit the family members that still hang out in that neck of the woods, but he doesn't go back to Olympus proper. He hasn't been there since Herakles freed Prometheus way back when.

I think E has a sense, though, that there are still some of the older gods -- Zeus especially -- at Olympus, or he wouldn't have as much reason to avoid it. That can certainly be a false sense, though. I am flexible and vague.

I figure it's also worth pointing out that the gods may be from different versions of the same world, and we can still account for them all knowing each other. I figure Olympus is not really of one world or another, right? So it's entirely possible that while all the various gods may have been hanging out in the same prehistoric Olympus and Greece, they could have dispersed into several different worlds in the intervening millennia. Possibly? I dunno, but I'm throwing it out there for consideration. :)

Definitely a good idea to consider! Another I think is good that if some gods haven't been back to Olympus in ages, then they might just not know that people are hanging out there again. "Eh? What? Zeus is back?"

True! I rather like that as well.

. . . I'm gonna take a moment to shake my head at how ridiculously fucked up this family and its lines of communication are, now.

Ahaha. The REAL reason everyone left: tired of being gossiped about by all of their brothers, sisters, half-brothers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, neices, second cousins twice removed...

As far as I know, Demeter stays far away from the other gods except for her daughter who she lives with in Southern France.

She may walk through Greece but she doesn't visit, which is why Milliways is strange, its been a couple thousand years since she's seen this much of her family in one place.

I think a lot of it predates tags, so you might have some trouble... XD

The Zeus thing is one of the reasons I wanted to make this post - Zeus has always been very clearly out of things before now, with us being careful not to mention him and his actions much. The deal behind him being reserved isn't just because... well, extremely powerful... but also because he's got strong parallels with, y'know, Almighty Creator Father God. So if he's going to start showing up in posts and plots, I'd like us to be on the same page with it. :D?

Oh my lordy, this is reminding me that I need to make a State-of-the-Gaia post, since I've been NPCing her with Prometheus for the past two years.

Prometheus hasn't been to Olympus since he stole fire. That simple. Any gods that aren't Epimetheus or Mercer have pretty much been chance encounters, and even his times with them are irregular (and tend to end in fights).

He's not automatically on good terms with gods just because they're pissed off at Zeus, either. The enemy of his enemy could still be his enemy: he's got a long memory, and no one knows how to hold a grudge like he can.

...I don't have anything else to add for the moment.

I have to say that I really like Adiva's idea of the gods not just scattering, but scattering across multiple worlds. I am all for stuff that facilitates individual muns doing their own thing without contradicting what's come before or what might come later.

Yeah - it certainly makes things easier, if nothing else.

The one downside that I see with it though is that it dissolves any real sense of canon unity, y'know? Like we wouldn't be able to do any sort of canon-wide plot in the future, at least not in the same way. Part of me feels that it's a pretty big world (especially when you factor in thousands of years of it in which things can take place) so it shouldn't be too hard for specific muns or pups to avoid plot points coming up if they so choose; on the other hand it'd be pretty difficult to bring everyone together on something if they're all in different worlds.

Does that make sense?
