five minutes to midnight
doojoon/junhyung ; pg ; 572w
he's waiting for midnight to come
23:55
He sits there waiting by the phone. Now and then his hand reaches out to take a spoonful of ice. It's strawberry; their favorite.
He's eating the ice that was meant for them.
23:56
He tries not to, but somehow he keeps on glancing at the phone. With every second passing by, he wonders if there is ever going to be a call.
Maybe if he stares at the phone long enough, Doojoon's call will come faster.
But their ice is melting.
23:57
He wonders if it was all just a lie. Maybe there was never going to be a phone call. Maybe there never was a date.
Maybe the ice wasn't meant for them after all.
23:58
He picks up his phone to see if there's something wrong with it. Doojoon could also have forgotten his phone. Or he hasn't had any time to call him yet.
He thinks it's time to put the ice back into the freezer.
23:59
He stands up, straightening his pajamas while doing so. He gives his phone a glance for the last time, then he walks away to his bedroom.
He leaves behind a stain of their melted ice.
00:00
He's ready to dream.
To dream about melted ice and forgotten phone calls.
00:01
He jumps out of bed and sprints to the kitchen when his phone rings. Breathing a hello, his hands tremble in anticipation.
Hello? Junhyung?
His heart tries to make its way out of his chest.
Doojoon?
He doesn't get an answer and he wonders if he's dreaming.
I'm sorry.
He barely hears the whisper, phone falling out of his hands when he understands it.
00:05
He changes into a pair of jeans, shoving a shirt over his head. Grabbing his jacket and pulling on his shoes, he walks outside.
In his hand he holds a bag with their ice.
00:20
He arrives at an apartment that shouldn't be familiar, but somehow it is. He sees the lights are still on and he wonders if he's stupid for coming here.
The ice has probably melted once again.
00:21
He rings the bell and waits, heart beating faster with every second that passes. The door opens and he holds his breath.
Hi.
Doojoon looks back at him, dark bags clearly visible under his eyes.
You shouldn't be here.
Junhyung agrees, he shouldn't be here. But he is.
I've got our ice cream.
00:23
He's lead into the living room, where clothes and empty packages of food are scattered. A pair of eyes stare at him, trying to make him change his mind. But he doesn't and instead moves some clothes aside to sit down.
00:24
He gives the bag with ice to Doojoon. It's silently accepted and Doojoon walks to the kitchen.
What are you doing here?
He looks at the girl and shrugs his shoulders.
You don't belong here.
He just nods.
Don't you care?
He looks up and stares at her. She gets up, holding her baby tight against her chest.
I want you gone by the morning.
00:25
He chuckles.
It's already morning.
00:30
Doojoon finally comes back, holding the ice and two spoons.
You shouldn't be here.
Junhyung sighs.
But I'm glad you are.
00:33
He's sure that everything will be okay. Someday it will be.
For now, he's happy with this. He's happy with the fingers tangling in his hair, those kisses all over his body. It's all he needs.
00:35
The ice is dripping down the table, forgotten and on the back of their minds.
A/N: I had the song stuck in my head all week, and I had been planning to write something based on it since forever. My original idea was completely different, but I still like how this turned out. And now I'm thinking about making all these fics based on the song, just completely different stories. Or maybe turn this into a 'Five Minutes to Midnight' series (I really like that idea actually XD)
