it's all about the ending

their story has to have an ending too

AN: My present for nikipiyoko 's 1st-year-of-writing anniversary. I promised it some time ago and here it is. I hope you'll write more stories, dear! ♥ And now I'll go and do some homework/go to school, since I shouldn't be here in the first place.

Their first meeting is on accident.

His shoelace gets caught in one of the many bushes on the sidewalk, his books falling out of his hands and he falls to the ground shortly after. It's the perfect way to meet someone, it's cliche and most of all human. He is used to those cliches and doesn't find it all that human.

If I were human, he thinks, things like this wouldn't happen all the time.

They end up spending a lot of time together. He doesn't realize it until he calls Soohyun one night for no reason at all. They talk about their day (how much fun they had at that little sushi bar down the street), their plans for the rest of the week (Tuesday they'll go to that cute bookstore, Thursday they'll go shopping for some clothes and Saturday they will go watch a movie) and things Kiseop can't even remember.

It scares himself how much he longs to hear Soohyun's voice when they're not hanging out. He promises himself that he isn't going to call Soohyun on his 'free' days anymore.

After ten minutes he picks up the phone and dials the familiar number.

Screw promises.

Soohyun has always been good at reading people. When he was ten he already figured out everyone in his class, he knew who to hang out with and that his teacher had a soft spot for those kids that always tilted their heads cutely (his mom once warned him to stop tilting his head like that, his neck could give him problems later).

And when he grew older, nothing changed. He knew what was going on in Kiseop's mind after their third meeting. He decided to ignore it, to let everything go on its own accord.

But he didn't really know how to read himself. It was only when he realized what was going on with Kiseop, that he started wondering if the same thing was happening to him.

*

They go to the bookstore on Tuesday. Soohyun is surprised by the change in Kiseop. The books are luring Kiseop in, entrancing him and moving him away from the real word. Kiseop runs his fingers over the covers, like reading the books with his fingertips. His eyes lighten up and Soohyun can feel the excitement radiating off of him.

Soohyun hopes Kiseop will look at him like that someday too. It's the first time he's seen Kiseop that excited, that happy really, and he tries to do everything to see that light in his eyes again.

But no matter how much tighter Soohyun hugs him, the longer Soohyun kisses him, the more he tries to make Kiseop smile...He never gets to see that light again.

He figures out those books are Kiseop's one and only love, there is no way for Soohyun to replace that. But he tries. He tries to show Kiseop love, tries to prove that persons are capable of giving that love too.

And there's the resistance that makes him want to give up. He wonders how many people have given up on Kiseop because of that. He promises that he won't ever give up.

*

“Did you know I dream about you a lot?” Kiseop asks him. Soohyun tries to hide his pleased smile, but Kiseop sees it anyways. They laugh, Kiseop hitting Soohyun's arm.

“Is that why you've been looking so happy lately?” Soohyun teases.

Kiseop shakes his head, a grin on his face. “Just drink your coffee.” He answers, taking a sip himself.

Soohyun thinks that he might have gotten a breakthrough. He hopes those dreams continue.

*

Those dreams do continue, Kiseop just doesn't tell him anymore. Soohyun finds out about it, when he arrives at Kiseop's apartment one day. Kiseop just jumps up and clings to him.

“You're here. I was so scared - I thought...you're here.”

Soohyun holds Kiseop tighter, wondering what on earth he is talking about. He doesn't have to ask though, Kiseop spills it out immediately. Afterwards, Soohyun wonders how he missed this. It was all so obvious. Kiseop smiling more, but the smile never reached his eyes. The dark bags under his eyes, the worried glances.

“You know I'll be here right? I won't leave you.”

--

Kiseop is used to reading tons of books. He won't change that for anyone, not even Soohyun. He likes the stories, they give him so much more than real life. Those stories tell about true love, love that lasts forever.

Soohyun always tells him that they could have a story like that in real life too. He doesn't believe Soohyun. Because true love doesn't happen in real life. Love like that isn't part of his life.

*

He hates the fact that Soohyun tells him the endings of books. Somehow Soohyun has always read the books before him and he always tells him what's going to happen.

“Ah, this book. It ends with a failure, how saddening isn't it?”

or

“Of course this will be true love, it's so obvious don't you think?”

Kiseop knows Soohyun does it on purpose, to get back at what he can't get. But Kiseop can't give it to him. He wants to, but he can't.

*

Soohyun gives him a book one day. The cover is black, but a heart is craved into it. There's no title, no author.

He opens the book and reads the first page. Our story, it says.

He has finished the book in 2 hours. He recognized the story after the first sentences.

When he looks up, he sees Soohyun isn't there anymore. Quickly getting up, he walks around the house. Suddenly he spots Soohyun.

Walking over to the balcony, he wraps his arms around Soohyun.

“There's only two ways to end a romance.” He says. “It ends in failure. Or it ends in true love.”

“So, how does our story end?” Soohyun asks.

Kiseop gulps. It's now or never. “It's true love. What else can it be?”
