Times long gone

I went into town today to buy some magazines, then I went to a small museum, which was very nice. I saw photos of what West London looked like back in the Victorian era up until the '30s. Shops were beautiful back then, with their thick hand-cast glass and natural wooden frames. All the people in the photos, standing proudly outside their shops, ( Read more... )

I often think about what hard times my ancestors, and even just my grandparents, went through, and I can only marvel at how they survived it all. Not that there was any choice. I'm sure they could have found something to admire about our way of life, too, at least the growing social equality. It used to be all about social class, and it isn't so much anymore. I'm grateful for that. Also, with all of our spare time, more people have the opportunity to use and develop their special gifts. But the abscence of hardship for many means that we don't develop character in quite the same way...
