I think people hate it because vampires don't sparkle. =^-^=
I've also read people who theorize whether Bella is written as a dull ambiguous character with no real redeeming qualities to help flesh out the character in the reader's mind, or if it's a brilliant use of a nondescript character that allows the reader to put themselves into the character's shoes that much easier and thus be a story about themselves rather than the character. Escapism, basically.
Does he like me? I hope he likes me. I don't think he likes me. Oh god, he hates me! Do I smell? I hope he likes me (oh by the way he’s a vampire) ...but does he like me? I'll just DIE if he doesn't like me! (well ok yeah I could have been killed but...) DOES HE LIKE ME???!!!!!

Sure Vamps sparkle... right before they burst into flames!
For me, it was the "writing is thick and dull" part, as if she were a 7th-grader doing this for an English project and trying to use a different way to say "said" or "used" every time...and failing.
Couldn't finish it. It never even got funny. I had to walk away.
