I think you're right that, in an environment without men, women would oppress each other. I have been in a couple of work settings where I have been the only man (and superfluous to the power structure), and the women established a pecking order and treated each other with great harshness.

I have seen arguments that such behavior represents the assumption of quasi-male roles, but am unconvinced.
