[Someone's been turned into a swishy-fish, and boy has it surprised him. You'd be surprised, too if you were right in the middle of fighting someone who looked like he was about to kick your nerd ass and drag it through a dumpster, but then suddenly you had a big yellow tail like something out of a koi pond, and your opponent's drowning and doing ( Read more... )

I don't think anyone just let them drown, but... it all happened so fast. I don't think anybody thought it would happen. Are you all right?

I'm fine. Don't worry about me! What about the citizens of the town?! You should take whoever you can, and get them to the surface of the lake so they can BREATHE! [he sounds sharp, but with a very audible edge of panic. There's the sound of splashing and muffled cursing in the background]

That is...

T-Tell me...

The people...at the matches underwater. They weren't the only ones who...? [All those people in the town...all those merpeople, who were looking after them...wasn't ANYONE saved aside from his opponant, Braxton? He's already horrified at the thought...]

[ Braxton is not amused. His unhappy splashes and above-water cursing is probably evidence of this. ]

[Gau has to help him. A merman turned human won't know how to swim like a human, he assumes. He doesn't know what'll happen if he tries to leave the water...so he peeks his head up, just enough to peer out of the water. Concern and what he seems to think might constitute a grim, determined "manly" expression are readable in his face.

He opens his mouth to speak to Braxton, but realizes it's full of water, and shuts it again, finally turning to his junogam with a sigh, typing with one hand. Parts of his new tail already hurt, and realizes he's actually lost a few scales, probably scraping rocks in his haste to break the surface...

He holds up the little screen, still trying to hold the former merman's head out of the water like some would-be dolphin]

Will try to get you to shore then go back for anyone else I can. (Survivors = (?))

Can you swim with legs? (Yes/No?)

No, you're not the only one. You remember the Gillyweed, don't you?

The...? [Trying to cover up fear with sounding as perpetually pissed-off as Church usually does, except he's a lot less practiced, and a lot more harmless-looking than a teal, combat trained guy with a sniper rifle.]

what's a weed going to...?

[Oh wait.]
That plant which allowed waterbreathing?

It's...not like it'd just grow within easy reach necessarily, right?

[Right? that would just be...
Aah. Right. There's a clump right on that ROCK over there. Well doesn't THAT just figure...
Now he feels stupid. There's a long pause on the junogram. he as the grace to sound embarrassed.]

I...just found some. I can't believe I didn't think of that...

Um...is there Gillyweed underwater, too? Within reach of the other people?

Yes. The plant that allowed water-breathing.

Hey, things happened pretty fast. If there wasn't Gillyweed within reach of the city more than a few would have died.

[Gau's not the only one panicked, but at least this one is slightly better at covering it.]

Gau, you need to calm down. Either get to them to the surface or find that seaweed they had us eat and they'll be fine. They will be.

That seaweed! Of course! That must be what Tex-san meant!

Are you okay, Anathema-san? You got...? [Turned into one of these too? Yup. Yup. He doesn't want to believe it...there's something disturbing about having your body change shape in front of you...]

Exactly! If nothing else, it'll leave one less change for them for them to panic over.

[Aaand a pause as she struggles with her own newly acquired appendage, this is really kinda bizarre even for her.] I'm alright. I'll be even better once I figure out how to use this thing.

Thing...? You mean the tail? It's not that hard. [it's kind of instinctual. Even with what h e can feel are layers of very...different muscles, it feels rather natural. then again...]

Uhm..what does.your tail look like? Maybe that's it? I feel like a goldfish...

[Someone ended up looking like he came fresh out of the koi pond. He'd really like to know if other people ended up this...COLORFUL. He feels like an idiot with this rather...YELLOW tail...and he's already lost scales.
He can't express how weird it it that that would hurt.]

While the change is very upsetting you should calm down.

There were casualties, but that's to be expected. Lungs don't exactly handle water very well. [sarcasm is here, he's sounding less than thrilled about everything however.] It's quite a distance to the surface and I believe it's a bit late after the change to go saving people.

[A long pause. Gau's voice is very quiet when he speaks again.]

How...many?
How many people drowned?
[There's Braxton, still thrashing and cursing. Gau wonders if perhaps he could have snatched another person too and still made it to the surface, twice as exhausted but with one more person alive...]

Someone...will need to ask the merpeople how they...take care of their dead. [He sounds so hollow. So defeated. Innocent people died down there...]

[hrm. kids these days.] I am unsure. Doing a body count isn't their first priority at the moment- changing everyone back before the number goes higher is. I assume it is a smaller portion of their community, or there would be more widespread panic.

[he sighs] We can ask once this commotion is over. I don't believe it's fully registered for the people who live down here. The living need to be dealt with first, in any case.

[he's right! Pull yourself together, Gau! He straightens. He has to represent the world of Nabari! People die all the time there!]
You're...right. Moving people close to the surface would keep them by a good source of air at least if the...gillewid or whatever it's called doesn't work for long enough. After that...we could offer to do whatever we can to fix this.
