Bats!

I am Batty about them! The "Little Brown Bat" or Myotis Lucifugus), the most common bat in the Americas. If you watch it through at the very end you hear me go "Whoah!" and I duck. A bat dived for an insect next to my head. They will come around us alot when we are out in the yard as we attract the bugs. It great!

cool, what type of a bats are they? where I live in Sydney, Australia we see hundreds of them nightly flying over the skies mostly in Spring and summer ( they are probably a different type to your ones maybe they are called 'flying foxes' or fruit bats)
Its funny my partner and I were jogging in the park one night in summer and there were loads of bats that night, these two American tourists asked us if the bats were dangerous, they were kind of worried, I was like no, no these ones are fruit bats they dont eat people. ha ha!

I can see how when there are loads of them if people dont know they only eat fruit it could be intimidating as they are quite noisy and can fly quite low and sort of swoop when they fly lower.

Oh man, the "Little Brown Bat" is certainly different from Flying Foxes! Those are huge! I edit the above entry to include the type of bat.

I love bats too! The little brown bats are so cute and if you put a bat-house in your yard you will attract even more. Someone not too far from here has a bunch of these houses...I like to watch the little guys swoop out of them & frankly, since the houses went up the mosquito population has dropped to zero.

A bat house is on my list. We haven't started installing any of our nesting boxes this past year as I am still getting the yard into a place where I can maintain it. I built bat houses for one of the farms I have worked on. But thanks for the reminder and maybe next season. The little browns are going into their mating season in the next month or so and then they head south for hibernation. I hope to have a couple of houses up in our trees to welcome them back next spring.

I love them too, especially the flying foxes!

I've never seen bats in my local area, which doesn't mean we don't have them. I've considered putting up bat houses, but worry about guano dripping down the side of the house.

I get very annoyed with people who go all ooogly and start screaming and waving their hands around at the sight or even the mention of a bat. I had one trapped in my top floor attic (a former house) once. I opened all the windows, turned off the lights, and left the room until s/he echo-located out into the night. All that running around waving arms just interferes with their radar.

I love your night lights in the garden. You have a lovely piece of Eden there that you've created.

We'll be in Annapolis for a wedding weekend of September 19th. How far away are you from Annapolis?

Quite a ways! 3 Hours are more. However, we wouldn't be home then. We aren't the MD Renaissance Festival which is only just a few minutes outside of Annapolis. Excellent festival with some of the highest art in the Renn Scene. We are one of the only festivals that doesn't have mostly resell booths carrying imports. Our show is almost entirely handcraft with only a couple of import booths. http://www.rennfest.com/
I hope we see you there. You will love it!

Did you mean you ARE at the Maryland Renfest? Yes, we'll be there! Our wedding couple decided on this date so people travelling in from out of town could see the wedding on Friday and have the rest of the weekend to have fun at the Maryland rennfest, since it's supposed to be some of the best.

I'm just wondering how I'll ever manage to have enough money to buy all the wonderfuls I'll find at the Rennfest and then in October at te FaerieCon. It's going to be an exorbitantly expensive two months!

We had tons of bats but then they set up light housekeeping in our attic, so we had to call a guy to insert a "bat valve" to let them leave at night, but not let them back in, then they fumigated the guano. Expensive but humane. We have bat houses in the field behind the house, and we hope they haven't held a grudge, because we like when they eat our bugs, but not when they poop on our gear...:-) Can't wait to get over to MDRF- we'll definitely come say hi.
