When someone on the internet says something you don't like -- whether it be something prejudiced or discriminatory in some way, or whether it just disses your favourite tv show -- you probably make the assumption that they are willing and able to participate in a discussion about it/defend themselves. Yes, you absolutely should be, and anyone who tells you otherwise is completely wrong.

My own journal policy is "friends only" and "If you act like a dick, I'll ban you." It works pretty well, and I've only ever laid the BanHammer down twice in 9 years here.
