Sideswipe decided he didn’t like this feeling.  He felt useless.  For years, he’d had a purpose; a reason for being and a reason for doing.  Now… now he felt useless.  He wasn’t like Jolt; he couldn’t adapt to another function like the scout had to medicine.  He was a warrior through and through.

He barely looked up as Ironhide stomped into the hanger.  Ironhide was suffering just as much, if not more, than Sideswipe was.  Ironhide had been built for war, had honed his skills with the Decepticons before defecting to the Autobots.  Ironhide was a warrior.

And they were both useless.  Neither of them had any purpose now that the war was all but over.

Sideswipe watched as Ironhide let one of his cannons out and began tinkering with it.  It didn’t matter if his cannons were in optimum condition, but it was habit that had him doing it.  Much as Sideswipe had already sharpened and polished his arm blades.

“Fragging hate this.” He muttered, rising up and skating across to where Ironhide had seated himself.  Ironhide just grunted, continuing his explorations into the inner working of his cannon.
“Ironhide?” Sideswipe spoke again after long quiet moments had elapsed.
“What d’ya want me to say?  You know I hate it too.  Mechs like us, we’re not built for peace.  We’re fighters, and without a war, we’ve got no purpose.” Sideswipe slumped against Ironhide’s side, ignoring the black mech’s grunt of annoyance.
“Hate it.”
“Yeah, got to deal with it though.” Ironhide let his cannon retract and shifted so Sideswipe was seated more comfortably.
“We can still spar and train, right?” Sideswipe asked, optics glinting.
“Optimus hasn’t said we can’t.” Ironhide agreed, the words barely out of his vocaliser before he found himself with a lapful of Sideswipe.
“This is not sparring.”
“No, but it serves a better purpose than sparring.” Sideswipe grinned before cutting off any protest Ironhide could make with a kiss.
