May want to add reference to FurNation (listed as starting in Nov, 1996) as it preceded FurAffinity as a fandom art repository. Went on and offline several times in 2009.
o/~ We didn't start the fandom...it was always furry, so what's the worry? o/~
I got caught up in the B&W indie comics in the mid/late 80s, even read Critters and Albedo before I found the fandom in 1990 via Rowrbrazzle (successor to Vootie), and alternately via friends on a predecessor MUCK that led to the birth of FurryMUCK.
An observation a friend had that when FurryMUCK came along, ConFURence went from a place to meet the artists, to a place to meet other fans. A community was born.
I also got caught up in those B&W Indie comics in the mid 80's.. there was a comic book store in Wichita KS (Prairie Dog Comics) that had a big rack of them.
But when my family moved to East Texas in late '88 the stores here only sold superheroes so I couldn't buy them anymore. So I "dropped out" until I discovered the fandom in 2003. It's amazing how fast it's grown.
There was an interesting panel at Anthrocon about the history of fursuiting (it was recorded...wish I knew where to find the recording). I believe the panelists were Roxikat, Yippie, KuddlePup and Robert King.
I'd like to see a panel about it too. But I think I'd be very underqualified for running one since I discovered furry in the summer of 2003. And I'm relying on things I've discovered on the net and from other furs. I'd rather have someone who was "there" when furry began do the panel.
Anthrocon this year had a panel about the beginnings of fursuiting with Yippie, Yappy, Roxi and Robert King and it was very informative. I wish we had more panels like that.
