Made for the "Anything Goes Challenge" @ camelot_love.

This post is going to be very long, not to mention very image heavy. Contains spoilers for all of series 1, so don't look if you don't want to be spoiled.

Screencaps by wikked_angel_78, inadream_caps, and the BBC.
Song lyrics from Sing365
Song suggestions also by writeangel1. Thanks girl. I almost gave up on this because finding that "one" father-daughter song proved so elusive.

I AM………

I am a daughter. A sister. A granddaughter. A niece. A friend. I am a partner. A student. A young girl and a grown woman. I am confident and scared, terrified and excited. I am loving, caring and thoughtful. And hopeful. I am sick and tired. I am shy and friendly. And careful and careless. I am broken and whole. I am misunderstood, misguided and misled. I am hard working and determined, but a little scared on the inside. I wish on stars and dream my dreams. I pray to god and cry my tears. I smile on the outside while I’m dying on the inside. I listen to others who won’t listen to me. I walk on eggshells and I walk on fire. I believe in passion but not true love. I love you and I push you away. I want you but not so close. I am everything and nothing all at once. And all I want is for you to……..

Love Me

Who am I? I am Guinevere

Often reviled as the adulterous wench whose lustful ways helped destroy a kingdom. Guinevere has often been written off by purists and haters alike as being nothing more than Arthur’s wife and Lancelot’s bed buddy.

But who was she really? Was she the scheming hussy history paints her or is she often misunderstood and reviled due to circumstances beyond her control?

sophielou21 wrote at my request a few months back a very comprehensive essay about the lives and loves of one Guinevere, Queen of Camelot. It’s a very tragic tale, no matter who tells it. See the essay: The Many Lives of Gwenhwyfar.

In most versions of the legend, Guinevere is a lady of high standing. A woman so beautiful that men instantly fell under her spell, including her beloved husband Arthur.

So when I heard that the BBC was doing their version of the legends of King Arthur, I figured they’d do the same ole, same ole. Imagine my surprise when they completely turned the legend(s) on its head. Instead of doing the same ole formula where we had Arthur and a his wise old grey beard adviser Merlin, they made the two men contemporaries. Then added to the mix they made Guinevere a ladies maid, instead of a lady/princess that she is in the legends. Throw in Morgana aka Morgan Le Fay, Uther Pendragon and crabby yet lovable Gaius and you have a winning combination.

In this version of the tale Guinevere is no spoiled lady/princess whose marriage will be arranged to Arthur. Instead the writers seems hell bent on torturing us with the slow burn approach. I say BRING IT, and do it right.

This fanmix was supposed to be done for the “Anything Goes Challenge” @ Camelot_Love. However since I’m West Indian and can’t seem to ever get anything done one time, its hella late.

This mix is totally dedicated to Sophielou21. Feel better love.

All 16 songs were carefully chosen to reflect Guinevere and her relationships with the people who will have the most influence in her life.

The young handmaiden of Camelot has no idea of her destiny. Like most servants she spends her days catering to her mistress, and like most young women probably has her head in the clouds at frequent intervals. Dreaming dreams of what she probably thinks will be her lot in life. She is a devoted friend to and servant to her mistress the Lady Morgana, the ward of the king. She is the devoted and loving daughter to her father Tom, the blacksmith for the common folk of city. She spends her days making sandwiches with "more smoke than pigeon" for her dad and picking flowers for her mistress.

Like most young women of that age, she is unsure of herself and her bumbling ways and shy demeanor bear credence to this.

In is during these years that she meets and befriends Merlin, a young man with a deadly secret that has only recently arrived in Camelot. In the sweetness of youth she develops a crush on the oblivious young man, who becomes the servant to the 'The Camelot Bully" Prince Arthur. Unfortunately for Gwen, Merlin is very unaware of her feelings and only sees her as a friend. Through the course of time her crush wanes and the two form a sweet, loyal and caring friendship.

Unfortunately while things may look right on the surface, they are anything but. Tom in a quest to give his daughter a better life makes a pact with a magician Tauren(sp) to turn metal into gold. Unfortunately anything dealing with magic is outlawed in Camelot and Tom is caught and executed by a very unforgiving king. Hence begins the spiral of Guinevere's life from innocent childhood to cynical adult.

One of the things I absolutely LOVE about this version of the tale is the friendship between Guinevere and her mistress, the Lady Morgana. However its the one aspect of the show that also worries me the most, as I fear the writers will make them adversaries. Currently Morgana is the only one who can and will stand up for Gwen. She stood toe to toe with Uther and told him point blank that he would regret it if he ever killed Tom. Unfortunately Uther is a law unto himself, he is the king after all and poor Tom met the fate of so many others who dabbled in magic. Morgana made good on her promise, but in the end couldn't go through with it after a half assed apology by Uther.

Likewise Gwen is the only one who truly knows the extent of Morgana's "visions". A secret so deadly that even her status as the kings ward wouldn't protect her. She's the one who has soothed Morgana's mind and body after each and every terrifying nightmare. There friendship is the most solid of any on the show and the only one that can be broken whether at the writers whim or due to circumstances which will pull them apart. I just wish they don't do that. I mean how trite would it be to have the only two women on the show at each others throat.

Gwen even cautions Morgana not to incur the kings wrath by standing up for her, an edict which Morgana ignores. She is clapped in irons for her trouble and hence her plot "To Kill The King" is born.

And Uther, what can I say about Uther "Off With His Head" Pendragon. A tyrant who has no sympathy for user of magic and sorcery. This song I think fits him so freaking well and I thank writeangel1 for bringing it to my attention. He has taken from Gwen the only person who truly loved her without reserve and turned her world upside down.

While Morgana is busy plotting away, Gwen goes to see Gaius and Merlin. Surprisingly the last person Gwen expects to see comes to find her, Arthur. He apologizes for what has transpired and reassures her that her home and job are safe. At the time this scene aired in Merlin e12, I wanted to kick Arthur in his royal nuts. I still to some extent want to do that. As much as I love the prat, there are times when he makes me want to adopt Uther's mentality of "Off With His Head."

Her father is gone and she is all alone in the world. She remembers the wonderful times she and love she had as an only child. She just wanted to have more time with her dad, more times filled with love and laughter. Hence the reason I chose this song sung by the late and great Luther Vandross. It makes me cry every time I hear it.

She's no longer the innocent girl of her childhood. She's now a woman, eyes wide open to the evil and injustices of the world. She makes a vow to never be at the mercy of others whims. She refuses to be the Cinderella in the tales her mother and father used to read to her as a child. She will take control of her own destiny.

He comes into Camelot a peasant who has lofty dreams of being a knight. A noble sentiment, except the first code of Camelot states that only the nobility can serve as knights. Unfortunately for our erstwhile young man, named Lancelot he is anything but. So an elaborate scheme cooked up by Merlin with the aid of his friend Gwen turns him into the younger son of a lord. He becomes smitten with our Guinevere and he says all the right things, does all the right things and she is impressed with his gallantry and respectful address but her heart remains unmoved. She is no longer the shy maiden of old, who would have blushed and simpered at a young man attentions.

Yes, I know I took some deliberate liberties with what happened in the show, but anyone who knows my stance at all knows I LOATHE Lancelot and the ship that is L/G.

She wonders if she will always be that cynical woman who no longer takes people at face value.

I won't even explain these two songs as my Arthur/Guinevere Fanmix already said it so eloquently.

Things will not run smooth for Guinevere, the servant turned Queen of Camelot. She will make mistakes and flounder. She will trust those who will seek to destroy her. These songs reflect her angst about what she feels has become of her relationship with the people in her life. The first song reflect her strained relationship with both Morgana and Merlin. The second is self explanatory.

These two are self explanatory as well.
