This is part 1/? in a number of posts dedicated to Merlin. This is the Arthur, Guinevere, and Arthur/Guinevere edition. It includes icons, FO banners, headers, wallpapers and a fanmix. This post is going to be very long, not to mention very image heavy. Contains spoilers for all of series 1, so don't look if you don't want to be spoiled. Originally posted in January, but not made public until now.

NO ORDINARY LOVE: AN ARTHUR/GUINEVERE FANMIX
This mix is filled with angsty tunes, chosen to reflect the way I hope the story of Arthur/Guinevere plays out in Merlin. It's also based off conversations that I've had with numerous A/G shippers @ human_trash, the fanfic journal of sophielou21. The story begins as both these individuals reflect on their respective positions within Camelot's society and their slowly changing relationship. The main fanmix along with the bonus mix, reflects their relationship from start to infinity. And because I know the writers are going to screw it up, it's a preemptive strike on my part. Hope you enjoy.
This project has been on my mind since e10 of Merlin. I don't think I have to explain why, as I'm sure you all can remember that now infamous scene of Arthur/Guinevere in the woods. It was also partially inspired by To You, An Admirer a multi-chapter fic written by sophielou21. Sophie and I have had numerous conversations in regards to the way we hope the the romance of our favourite pairing plays out on the show. The theme of the mix in case you haven't figured it out yet, is LOVE. All 22 songs were carefully chosen to reflect PASSION, ANGST, NEED and ETERNAL LOVE.
I don't know about anyone else, but I feel this tale works best with Arthur doing the falling. After all in order for Gwen to become Queen Guinevere she has to marry Arthur. In this tale there will be no marriage of convenience or a marriage made to unify neighbouring kingdoms. Gwen is a servant and Arthur a Crown Prince, by the dictates of society they shouldn't even be together. But we all know that true love doesn't see class, isn't prejudicial and hopefully wins in the end. So bring on the love story of the Prince & the Handmaiden.
This is one of 3 mixes that I have planned. There will be a second Arthur/Guinevere mix and a Gwen mix to follow at a later date.

Suddenly I See
A perfect song for Guinevere. The first time I heard this song I thought it fit the character to a T. Just listen to the lyrics of the song, I mean really listen to the words. She's all that's good and kind or as some of the Arwen shippers have said, she's all butterflies and daisies. She's all warmth and sunshine. She the apple of her father's eye and the rock upon which Morgana depends. Right now she's also Merlin's goodness and light, later she will be Arthur's.
Let Me Be Myself
I struggled to find a song to fit Arthur for the beginning portion of this mix. I almost gave up on the whole thing because I couldn't find that ONE song I was looking for. Then someone posted this on a board that I belong to and saved the day. I'd never heard it before then, but the first time I heard it I felt it fit Arthur's thoughts perfectly in regards to his relationship with his father and his station in life.
Arthur is very defined by who he is, a prince and future king. When we first meet him, he's an arrogant, big headed bully who tormented poor Merlin as many people included Gwen looked on. As the series progressed we see him slowly changing into the Once and Future King that inspired a legend. A legend that still captivates us hundreds of years later. Currently Arthur is restricted in his movements by his father, King Uther the Tyrant. While he tries to do what's right, he can only do so much as he is not yet king and must defer to his father's will. That hasn't stopped him however from doing what he feels is right. Such as e3: helping Merlin save Gwen from execution, e4: saving Merlin's life against the wishes of his father, e10: saving Merlin's village and e11: assuring Gwen that even though her life has been turned upside down he will do whatever it takes to ensure her future.

Guinevere's POV
She finds her thoughts straying often to the prince. In the beginning Gwen truly had no use for Arthur, as he is a PRAT, LOL. She doesn't condone his behaviour but as a servant what can she do, but look on it with disapproval. Later as she watches from afar, she comes to admire the man, but not the prince. She finds herself starting to care for him, but thinks nothing of it, because after all, with so many wealthy courtiers around not to mention princesses(I'm sure there are a few)why would he look at her, a servant. But Arthur does begin to see her, starting in e10 and even more so in e13 after she stays by his death bed and tells him how much she looks forward to his reign as king.

She's Morgana's servant, a girl he's known since he was a child. A woman he's never truly seen until that fateful day when she ripped him a new one for talking down about the food given to him by Hunith. Arthur was raised in privilege and he really doesn't understand what it means to go without and be thankful for what you have. Gwen on the other hand knows only all too well, after all the sandwich has more smoke than pigeon.
See the look on Arthur's face during that scene, he didn't know what hit him. I LOL'ed so hard. But I truly believe that this was the moment when Arthur fell in love with Guinevere, he like all men just doesn't know it yet.

The Closer I Get to You

Anyone who's heard this song know how truly well it fits Arthur/Gunievere. I can see their friendship starting in earnest especially after the events of e13, which appears in the fanart piece above. She nurses him back to him health and speaks highly of him while he's unconscious. Unfortunately for our Guinevere, even in the depths of fog Arthur hears her words and asks her to repeat them upon waking up. Then the flirting starts and he says her name in the way that turns our knees and brains to mush. Le sigh. But shes not having it and runs from the room as fast as her legs can carry her, with Arthur smiling devilishly the entire time.

We're all looking for that one special person to love. Unfortunately for these 2, circumstances and social status are keeping them apart. Gwen thinks her destiny lies with someone who has in the words of Sophie, "has big ears and a daft grin." Arthur too feels his destiny lies with another. However destiny has other plans for our duo. They were destined to love each other. Once again to quote Sophie, "they are each other's first, last and only love."
But fate can't do all the work, they have to give her a hand. No matter how stubborn and blind they each try to be in fighting their destinies, they will be together.

I'm sure she's seen for herself that he's been around the block. He is a Crowned Prince and many women flock to power and money. He's had women throwing themselves at him since birth and like a good lad, he's had his cake and dessert too. Unfortunately for Arthur Gwen isn't like the rest. She's not impressed with his title and his wealth. He'll have to work hard to win her love. She admires him, but considering her position she refuses to be used and thrown away like all the others before her

Now he has to work for it. For the first time in his life Arthur has to work to win the affections of the woman who has captured his heart. Her heart is saying HELL YES, but her mind is saying NO, NO, NO. But the prince is nothing if not stubborn and he will have his love. Because he knows that nothing worth having ever came easy.

My Confession
Its time for some home truth. He's in love for the first time in his life, but the woman in question and his father aren't having it. At first his father thought that this was an infatuation on the part of his son, but after seeing the lengths that his son would go to, to win the heart of the woman in question he quickly asserted his authority. Trying to put a stop to this unnatural romance(Uther's words, not mine), his father does everything in his power short of murder to put a damper on the prince's ardor. However, his interference just makes Arthur that much more determined to be with Guinevere. We've seen Arthur move heaven and earth for those he cares about. Do we really think he'd be any different with the woman who has captured his heart?

Since trying to reason with Arthur doesn't seem to be getting him anywhere, Uther decides to go after the path of least resistance. She's in love with the prince, but constantly questions herself, because she knows that she stands to lose the most if the wrong decision is made on her part. Plus there is Uther, the man who killed her father and shattered her world and has the power to destroy her if he so chooses.
What an unfortunate situation for Guinevere. She's between a rock and hard place. Should she listen to her heart and give into love or should she run like the wind and forget she ever knew a man named Arthur Pendragon.

Both of the above songs All I Want and All I Need are from the POV of both. She's finally decided to give him a chance, but she still remains cautious. He can see that she's still unsure of him but is willing to give him a chance to prove himself. She's just asking that he doesn't break her heart and he's says likewise.

I think this one is self explanatory. Both of these characters are broken, emotionally and the person whose responsible for their pain is still trying his damnedest to break them apart. Can ya'll take a guess who that person is?

Strong Enough
The secret is now out and all of Camelot is aware that Arthur is in love with the handmaiden. Men feel she's easy as she has no problem giving into the advances of the prince and women take their jealousy and venom out on her. They can't understand why Arthur would lower himself to consort with a mere servant, when he could have any woman his heart desires. Gwen under strain from the wrath of Camelot's noble's starts to break under the pressure. Her mind is telling her it isn't worth it, but her heart tells her to not give up. Hence her question to Arthur, is he strong enough to deal with the fallout of their unnatural romance.

And he lets her know in no uncertain terms that he will not let her go. Irregardless of what the kingdom's citizens want to say about their romance, he's in it for the long haul. However not everyone in Camelot is against the romance however, the peasants secretly show their support for the Guinevere, as she's one of them. And after all who amongst them can resist the fairytale romance taking place right in from of their very eyes. Even Merlin has gotten in on the action, while he thinks the obstacles standing in their way seem insurmountable he stands firmly in their corner lending support, especially to his bestfriend. Awww

A year into their romance with Uther trying his best to break them apart and the noble's trying their best to thwart the uppity servant who dared to love a man so far above her, Arthur decides its time to take their relationship to the next level. He wants to make her his princess.
But Uther still won't have it. So the two secretly marry with no one but Merlin the wiser. And he'll keep their secret to the grave or until Uther's death, whichever comes first.

Collide
The path of true love never did run smooth. There will always be obstacles in the way and unfortunately for these 2 there will be many icebergs waiting in the wings to sink this ship. Uther is dead and Arthur is now king. Years have passed and the last secret is now officially out. Arthur is married to Guinevere and has been for a number of years. Upon his ascension as king she now becomes Queen of Camelot. Under their reign the kingdom prospers and Arthur has united the land of Albion. During this period 2 sons have been born to carry on the Pendragon name and the future of the lineage. But all is not as it seems, as Albion is under threat from invaders in the north. Arthur as king and Merlin as his trusted adviser are off to war, leaving Guinevere to the malicious tongues angry nobles. It was during this time that a lone knight comes along to pledge his fealty to the King and Queen and Camelot. This knight remains in Camelot and pledges his hand in protection to the Queen and becomes her constant shadow.
Unbeknownst to the Queen, those who would seek to destroy her started vicious rumours that the she is having a love affair with this knight. The whispered rumours then reached the ear of the Queen, who tried to squashed the vindictive talk by separating herself from the knight. But the damage had already been done and the rumours then ran rampant throughout the kingdom.
Weary but victorious the king returns with his knights and is greeted by his loving wife and loyal subjects. However the rumours reach the ears of the king, who disbelieves the rumours. But when his trusted adviser brings forth the subject, all hell breaks loose.
The king starts to suspect that something truly went on while he was away. Tensions mount as Guinevere pleads her innocence to her husband, but the king feels that where there is smoke, there is fire. Trouble abounds in the relationship and that makes the malicious nobles happy. They feel the king will now set his wife aside due to her "supposed" infidelity.
Essentially I don't feel that this Guinevere will cheat. Not only would it be against her nature, but she isn't that kind of person. Then factor in all she'll have to go through just to be with Arthur, it would be foolish indeed if she throws it all away on some tawdry affair. But if the show chooses to stick somewhat to the legend and go down that route, what I feel is going to happen is Arthur will be made to believe that his wife cheated in his absence.

What About Now
They are still very much in love with each other. Even through all the anger, pain and the disillusionment of things gone horribly wrong, the love remains. Merlin seeing how emotionally broken both are due to these events, tries to have them reconcile. Arthur then makes the first move, as he is the one who refused to believe his wife's claims of innocence. Things are hashed out and resolved and they reunite, much to the joy of many and the anger of a few.

O.M.G., you've made it over my mountain of ramblings. You should be proud. I highly doubt Merlin will last so long as to make it as far into the story as the fanmix. But seriously I'd be VERY happy indeed it plays out somewhat the way I've summarized.

At first his father thought that this was an infatuation on the part of his son, but after seeing the lengths that his son would go to, to win the heart of the woman in question he quickly asserted his authority. Trying to put a stop to this unnatural romance(Uther's words, not mine), his father does everything in his power short of murder to put a damper on the prince's ardor. However, his interference just makes Arthur that much more determined to be with Guinevere. We've seen Arthur move heaven and earth for those he cares about. Do we really think he'd be any different with the woman who has captured his heart?

Since trying to reason with Arthur doesn't seem to be getting him anywhere, Uther decides to go after the path of least resistance. She's in love with the prince, but constantly questions herself, because she knows that she stands to lose the most if the wrong decision is made on her part. Plus there is Uther, the man who killed her father and shattered her world and has the power to destroy her if he so chooses.
What an unfortunate situation for Guinevere. She's between a rock and hard place. Should she listen to her heart and give into love or should she run like the wind and forget she ever knew a man named Arthur Pendragon.

Men feel she's easy as she has no problem giving into the advances of the prince and women take their jealousy and venom out on her. Gwen under strain from the wrath of Camelot's noble's starts to break under the pressure. Her mind is telling her it isn't worth it, but her heart tells her to not give up. Hence her question to Arthur, is he strong enough to deal with the fallout of their unnatural romance.

And he lets her know in no uncertain terms that he will not let her go. Irregardless of what the kingdom's citizens want to say about their romance, he's in it for the long haul. However not everyone in Camelot is against the romance however, the peasants secretly show their support for the Guinevere, as she's one of them. And after all who amongst them can resist the fairytale romance taking place right in from of their very eyes. Even Merlin has gotten in on the action, while he thinks the obstacles standing in their way seem insurmountable he stands firmly in their corner lending support, especially to his bestfriend. Awww

Collide
The path of true love never did run smooth. There will always be obstacles in the way and unfortunately for these 2 there will be many icebergs waiting in the wings to sink this ship. Uther is dead and Arthur is now king. Years have passed and the last secret is now officially out. Arthur is married to Guinevere and has been for a number of years. Upon his ascension as king she now becomes Queen of Camelot. Under their reign the kingdom prospers and Arthur has united the land of Albion. During this period 2 sons have been born to carry on the Pendragon name and the future of the lineage. But all is not as it seems, as Albion is under threat from invaders in the north. Arthur as king and Merlin as his trusted adviser are off to war, leaving Guinevere to the malicious tongues angry nobles. It was during this time that a lone knight comes along to pledge his fealty to the King and Queen and Camelot. This knight remains in Camelot and pledges his hand in protection to the Queen and becomes her constant shadow.
Unbeknownst to the Queen, those who would seek to destroy her started vicious rumours that the she is having a love affair with this knight. The whispered rumours then reached the ear of the Queen, who tried to squashed the vindictive talk by separating herself from the knight. But the damage had already been done and the rumours then ran rampant throughout the kingdom.
Weary but victorious the king returns with his knights and is greeted by his loving wife and loyal subjects. However the rumours reach the ears of the king, who disbelieves the rumours. But when his trusted adviser brings forth the subject, all hell breaks loose.
The king starts to suspect that something truly went on while he was away. Tensions mount as Guinevere pleads her innocence to her husband, but the king feels that where there is smoke, there is fire. Trouble abounds in the relationship and that makes the malicious nobles happy. They feel the king will now set his wife aside due to her "supposed" infidelity.
Essentially I don't feel that this Guinevere will cheat. Not only would it be against her nature, but she isn't that kind of person. Then factor in all she'll have to go through just to be with Arthur, it would be foolish indeed if she throws it all away on some tawdry affair. But if the show chooses to stick somewhat to the legend and go down that route, what I feel is going to happen is Arthur will be made to believe that his wife cheated in his absence.

What About Now
They are still very much in love with each other. Even through all the anger, pain and the disillusionment of things gone horribly wrong, the love remains. Merlin seeing how emotionally broken both are due to these events, tries to have them reconcile. Arthur then makes the first move, as he is the one who refused to believe his wife's claims of innocence. Things are hashed out and resolved and they reunite, much to the joy of many and the anger of a few.
