Circumcision and HIV

Feb 24, 2007 21:48

Whoa, I'm glad I'm circumcised, 'cause this study's results show that circumcised men are 50% to 60% less likely to get infected with the HIV. There's even a Dr de Cock [pun intended?] endorsing the findings of this study: "Circumcision is the most potent intervention in HIV prevention that has been described. "Now one must sit back and wait for a ( Read more... )

The question is though...if you weren't currently circumsized, would you have it done at this stage in your life for the added benie of being less likely to get HIV?

The big benefit would be in Africa- where condoms are scarce (thanks faith based initiatives!) and women are frequently raped by their HIV+ husbands. In areas where HIV infects 15-30% of the population, every little bit helps.

Me? Probably not, because I'm not in much danger of getting infected [does that say anything about my sex life? ;)]. Maybe I would do it later in life.

No, the most potent intervention in HIV is the condom. Circumscision is 50-60% for vaginal intercourse (at best). The condom is 90-95% effective.

But having a piece of skin lopped off your penis is more socially acceptable than wearing a piece of latex.

condoms don't typically protect against genital warts. They spread by primarily by skin contact.

Is it, really? A lot of homos seem to prefer that extra skin on their man..

I thought all Muslim males were supposed to be circumcised...

How do they do it over there? Is it in a hospital when you're a baby, or is it like in rural Egypt where they do it when the boy is ten at some big ceremony--with NO anaesthesia? (Yikes!--but then they also cut up girls' genitalia, yuck.)

I dunno.. I was circumcised between the ages of 1 to 10 days.
Back when I was working at the hospital, they had a 'circumcision package' in which the surgery was included with other 'benefits' and I'm not quite sure what those were. Once we had a teenager walk in with his father to get circumcised. So I guess not all mazaahib circumcise their children at birth.

I've never seen an uncircumcised penis. In real life, I mean. I'm sure someone's shown me a pic on the internet at one point.

I haven't seen a lot of penises, so I can't boast about how many that I've seen were uncircumcised and how many were circumcised.. but circumcised ones are definitely the way to go, I think.

Dude, HIV was totally the reason God proscribed circumcision! It says so in the Bible. In the front, I think.

I'm kidding of course. But in any event, don't do anything to get AIDS, my little Dan-Dan! A world without you is like an uncircumcised penis: It just wouldn't look right!

God didn't proscribe circumcision - he commanded it! Aleks, what do you do in shul? Don't let the rabbi catch you playing with your long, thick, circumcised... neck.

Aw, that was a real sweet thing to say, Aleks :) You're so amazing at saying things like that, you always make me chuckle.
