Scotty rolled over, stretching out on the bed and smiling at the feel of sunshine on his face. When he put his hand out and it continued to touch nothing but the sheets, however, he frowned. Opening his eyes, Scotty looked at the empty half of the bed next to him. He sat up, listening carefully for sounds in the bathroom or elsewhere.

“Kevin?” he called out curiously.

There was no reply. Scotty climbed out of bed, cringing as his feet touched the cold floor. He grabbed his jeans from where they had been tossed the night before, and pulled them on over his boxers. Then he padded out into the living room.

“Kevin?” Scotty asked again. “Where is he?” he continued quietly to himself.

He wondered if maybe Kevin had cleared out in embarrassment. It had been quite an emotional night for him, as he clung to Scotty, fighting tears while he talked about everything that had been happening at the firm the last few months. The hard work unrecognized, the couples dinner where everyone had teased him about girlfriends while his boss looked on, the snide remarks from co-workers about the Ojai account. It would have all been worth it, Kevin claimed, if he had made partner. If his career and his future were now secure. Scotty held him tightly, whispering soothing words in his ear until Kevin, exhausted, finally fell asleep. Scotty refused to leave, however; he simply undressed as carefully as possible and laid back down next to Kevin. Only to wake up alone.

The front door opened, and Scotty turned towards it. Kevin walked in, head down as he skimmed the contents of a portfolio.

“Where were you?” Scotty asked.

Kevin looked up, startled. He closed the portfolio and offered Scotty a smile. “Morning,” he said as he walked quickly over and gave Scotty a kiss.

“Usually people sneak out in the wee hours of the morning when they spend the night at someone else’s house,” Scotty pointed out. “Not their own.”

Kevin nodded, amused. “Sorry, I meant to be back before you woke up.”

“Back from where?”

“Kitty and Robert’s,” Kevin replied, heading towards the kitchen. “Do you want some coffee? Or breakfast?”

“Yes, coffee. No, breakfast. What were you doing there?”

Kevin focused on the coffee pot as he answered. “I, uh…Robert offered me a job as his communications director. I took it.”

“What?!”

Kevin laughed, facing Scotty again. “I know. It’s insane, but I think we could do some good together.”

Scotty was still staring at him in astonished disbelief.

“Say something,” Kevin requested.

Scotty opened his mouth wide, trying to come up with a response. “Well, OK. You didn’t think of, you know, talking over it with me first?”

Kevin furrowed his brow. “No. It’s my career.”

“But I’m a part of your life. If nothing else, I’m your friend.”

“What would you have told me?” Kevin asked, voice becoming tight with annoyance. “Stay where I am and be miserable?”

“No!” Scotty said, his own voice raising. “I would have said to do something you wanted to.”

“I am!”

“You can’t expect me to believe that,” Scotty shot back. “You’re telling me you’re going to be happy working for a Republican Senator? Someone who voted against gay marriage, I might add.”

“He wants someone who will fight him. He wants to lead in a new way.”

“God, that’s the most ridiculously vague piece of political crap I’ve heard in a long time.”

Kevin shook his head, turning away and pouring the mugs of coffee. Scotty took a breath, lifting his hands to his face and slowly exhaling. Calmer, he started to speak, “I know you’re upset about not making partner - ”

“It’s not about that.”

“Tommy firing you then.”

“No, it’s not that either.”

“Then what?!” Scotty lost his patience again.

“I need a change. I need to feel excited about work again. I need - ”

“And the only way to do that is to go against everything you believe in, to do a job for which you have no educational qualifications or previous experience? Why wouldn’t I be upset about that, Kevin? Do you think I want you to just toss away everything that matters to you and that you’ve worked for? You think I fell in love with a Republican aide?”

“What?” Kevin asked, shocked.

“I said - I said do you think…” Scotty trailed off, confused about what made Kevin react that way.

Kevin swallowed. “You fell in love with me?”

Scotty started to stammer, trying to come up with a way to downplay the confession he hadn’t meant to make. Kevin took two large steps forward, placing his hands on Scotty’s cheeks and pulling him into a passionate kiss. The steaming mugs of coffee were ignored, left behind in the kitchen as Kevin pushed Scotty back into the living room.

“Me too,” Kevin gasped out between kisses. “I love you too.”

“Oh. Good,” Scotty replied, dazed, tugging Kevin’s shirt out of his waistband.

Their path was rather inefficient, as they kept rotating when one or the other took the lead in moving them towards the bedroom. Sometimes pausing to let a kiss deepen as thoroughly as possible, sometimes nearly tripping over themselves with lips barely making contact as they hurriedly undressed each other.

Scotty was back to only his boxers by the time they fell on the bed. Kevin fought to remove his own pants, impeded by the distraction of kissing Scotty’s face, neck and chest everywhere he could reach.

“You taste so good,” he muttered.

Scotty sighed shakily, running his hands through Kevin’s hair. He then reached one hand down, slipping it into Kevin's open fly and fondling him through the thin fabric of his boxers. He pushed Kevin’s shoulder lightly with his other hand, rolling both of them over with Scotty landing on top. He bent down, sucking on Kevin’s collar bone as he moved his hips rhythmically, feeling Kevin’s arousal against his own.

“Scotty,” Kevin choked out, pulling his head back.

Scotty halted his activities suddenly. He stared down at Kevin. “If you stop me now, I swear I’m tying you to this bed until I’m done having my way with you.”

Kevin laughed happily. “Sounds kinky,” he said.

Scotty thrust harder, and Kevin moaned.

“I was going to say,” he continued breathlessly, “there’s lube and condoms in the drawer.”

He stretched out for the nightstand, indicating the drawer, but he couldn’t quite reach. Scotty crawled up the bed, dragging his body along Kevin’s, and opened the drawer. Scotty grabbed the necessary items and dropped back down until he was level with Kevin. They looked into each other’s eyes for a long beat, panting. Scotty finally smiled at Kevin, who inhaled deeply and nodded.

Things moved, somehow, even quicker after that. The last bits of clothing were finally pushed and pulled off, and Scotty slicked his fingers to prepare Kevin. Kevin writhed on the bed, close to release even before Scotty finally entered him. Scotty stayed deep inside Kevin, trapping Kevin’s erection between their bodies and simply rocking in small but forceful movements. Kevin reached his hand to Scotty’s neck, pulling him close; they held each other as they kissed deeply. Soon, it grew to be too much, and they both climaxed with strangled shouts.

Several minutes passed before Scotty, eyes closed as he rested on Kevin’s chest, was able to make a coherent comment or even find his voice. Finally, he swallowed and began to speak roughly, “I can’t believe we had fight sex before we had real sex.”

“Felt real to me,” Kevin murmured, a smile dancing on his lips.

“You know what I mean.”

Kevin swallowed. “It wasn’t fight sex, anyway. It was ‘I love you’ sex.”

Scotty smiled happily. “If I had known that was all it would take…”

Kevin chuckled, and then they were silent for a long time, simply enjoying each other’s closeness. Then Kevin spoke again, saying quietly, “I won’t take the job if you don’t want me to.”

Scotty shook his head slightly, dragging a leg along Kevin’s as he repositioned himself. “I want you to do whatever will make you happy.”

“As good as this just was,” Kevin observed with a laugh, “I don’t think I can make a career out of it.”

“Not unless you let me support you while you lay on the couch eating bonbons all day,” Scotty agreed, grinning.

“If I ate bonbons all day, you wouldn’t want to do this with me anymore.”

“Oh, I don’t know. It definitely broke my first-time record.”

“Not a 7.5?”

Scotty shook his head again. “9, definitely. Maybe 9.5”

“That’s it?!” Kevin asked, incredulous and just a tad offended.

Scotty lifted his head and turned it towards Kevin. He slid a hand up the sheets alongside Kevin’s body as he leaned down to kiss his pectoral.

“We gotta give ourselves something to shoot for. If it was this good now, just imagine how it will be with a little more practice.”

Kevin laughed happily. “Good point.”

Several days later, they had a late dinner to mark Kevin’s first day working with Robert. Scotty had a little too much wine and allowed himself to be talked into something he probably wouldn’t have agreed to under normal circumstances. They had snuck quietly into Nora’s house, hoping against hope they didn’t wake her. And now they were stretched out on the bed in Kevin’s old room, spooning with Scotty once again inside Kevin. They moved slowly; Kevin twisted, one hand on Scotty’s thigh for balance, kissing Scotty as best he could. Scotty stroked his hands up and down Kevin’s body, moving closer and closer to Kevin’s groin with each sweep. As the tips of his fingers brushed Kevin’s erection, Kevin broke away, gasping.

“Oh God, Scotty,” Kevin groaned.

“Shhh,” Scotty scolded, laughing quietly in the dark room. “I will never forgive you if you wake - ”

“Just…just…right there. Harder.”

Scotty complied, bending his head down and lightly biting Kevin’s shoulder as he sped up his movements.

“Everyone snuck someone into their rooms at some point or another growing up,” Kevin said quickly and breathlessly. “Except me.”

“Aw. Poor Kevin,” Scotty said, snickering.

“Shut up. You’re fulfilling a 25-year-old fantasy for me.”

“Sex, with your mom three doors down?”

Kevin dug his fingernails into Scotty’s thigh in warning. “A gorgeous man - unh, Scotty - making love to me in this bed.”

“I can just picture you here,” Scotty said, stopping his sentence to lick his lips and swallow, getting some moisture back in his throat. “Hand on yourself, dreaming about some hot kid at school.”

“And the reality is so much better than anything I could have dreamed of,” Kevin whispered, eyes closing as he turned again to kiss Scotty.

“I love you,” Scotty replied, turning Kevin onto his stomach as he put more force behind his movements.

He couldn’t even bring himself to scold when Kevin shouted in ecstasy a few minutes later.
