One of the very, very best Doctor Who novels of them all - easily in my top half a dozen, anyway. I'm a big fan of Miles's work on the EDAs and of the unofficial spinoff Faction Paradox that grew out of it, and indeed of Miles in general. He goes out of his way to be abrasive and certainly can hold a grudge, but while I don't agree with all of his opinions at least he has good reasons for (most of) them and they're always stated very amusingly. Favourite bit is where the Krotons show up - still one of the best things I've ever read in a Doctor Who book. ;D

It's one of these novels I read ages ago, enjoyed but haven't gone back to. I don't really like a lot of Miles' stuff but this one really surprised me. I still has a lot of the flaws of the early EDAs, he seems to use it as an excuse to be rude about other writing and it's a continuity nightmare. But as a stand alone story it's good with a lot of clever twists, scary Krotons (the description of killing someone with a crystalline weapon still sticks in my mind after all these years) and sets up a lot of interesting potential ( ... )

Alien Bodies was my first exposure to Krotons, so I was somewhat surprised when I went to look them up online afterwards and discovered they were commonly considered sort of rubbish. I don't rate AB quite as highly as some (it was v. enjoyable but thoroughly disorganized) but there is some damn good xenofiction in there.

He definitely has a fantastic vision - I have loved his novels when I have gotten the opportunity to read them. They have been few (sadly), but I know I will enjoy this one just as much!

Aside from his gorgeous writing, I find his opinions to be less gorgeous, but to each their own. I can read his book without having to suffer his opinions, lol.
