You know, I think BRIAN is a better actor than he usually gets credit for (check him out in I, Claudius...or even Trial of a Time Lord for that matter...) so with the right scripts I reckon it would have been.

I've heard the stories, as you may have yourself, that he was at one stage touted (at least by the press) as the successor to Peter Davison in 1984, but I think that story was mostly false as Colin Baker was lined up for it well in advance of the actual announcement. I've never heard of this earlier brush with Whodom, tbh, but if you look at the huge numbers of, often, not particularly Doctor-ish actors (with hindsight) that they considered in the 60s and 70s (Michael Hordern? Fulton Mackay?? Bernard Cribbins???) then it doesn't seem implausible, really.
