How does this work?
Since the ficathon covers both minor and original characters, there are two divisions. In both cases, participants may either choose a prompt from the prompt bank, or they may proceed unprompted and just write whatever strikes their fancy. Please note that not all the prompts are going to get filled, and you may take a prompt even if you did not leave a prompt. They're just there for inspiration, this is not a fic exchange. However, if you do claim a prompt, please do your very best to fill it. The person who left it will see that it was struck-through and thus claimed, and will doubtless be waiting on the edge of their seat for the result to show up.
What's a minor character?
Generally speaking, it's a character that only appears for one or two stories or episodes, and we don't see or hear from again. Frequently-recurring characters, even if they aren't the main characters, aren't considered minor characters for the purposes of this community. So, the Brig, or Jackie Tyler, or Haresh Chandra, are not minor characters. Dr. Malcom Taylor or Lois Habiba are.
When's it due?
After doing a thoroughly unscientific poll of my friendslist, it was pointed out to me that, for readers, it's better if fics are posted in a staggered manner, so there aren't 30 brilliant stories to read in one day. So, fics will be due throughout the month of July (and a bit into August). When participants sign up, they will select a specific posting date. A maximum of one fic will be posted per day, though there may be a few days when none are. I'll remove dates from the form as they are claimed and, once sign-ups are closed, will post a schedule. At that time, I will also post further information about how/where to post your fics (bottom line: post them wherever you want, but do cross-post here as well).
Additional Fine Print
When participants sign up, they'll be asked to pick a first and second choice of due date, and if they are using a prompt, a first and second choice of prompt. I'm online a shameful amount of the day and I'll be keeping up with striking out all claimed prompts and dates, so I don't expect that too many people will get bumped to their second choices for either. If I do have to bump you, though, I'll let you know very soon after you sign up (there's a field on the sign-up form to let me know how best to do that). Otherwise, you're off and running once you sign up. Minimum word-count for fics is 1000 words-there is no upper limit.
Do I need to be a member of the community to play?
You do not need to be a member of who_like_giants to participate, but I would ask that you either check in frequently or watch the comm to receive any announcements in a timely manner.
