Today is garbage pickup day, and when I was out walking Shadow just now, I saw this black-tailed deer skull sitting on a pile of trash bags in front of a neighbor's house.

That's really cool, but how can you be sure it's a black-tailed deer?

That's the only deer species we have in this state. (I like to say I'm the only whitetail in California!) Plus, blacktail antlers typically have only three tines per side. This one has two, with an incipient tine proximal to the pedicle, which would be typical of a younger buck.

They only have white-tail deer here in Virginia,i've never managed to see a buck though. Only fawns with their mothers or does on their own.

I sure wish we had whitetails around here! Wouldn't you know I live in one of the very few places in North America that they don't inhabit at all.

I'm not one for taxidermy/skeletal remains myself but this is pretty neat! I wonder why they would just throw it away like that. =/

I always kind of wanted to have one of those ceramic deer heads they make, speaking of which. They look alot more lively, plus they are humane.

Who on earth would throw away such a beautiful specimen? Looks like it's in great shape.

I agree. It's pretty much perfect. Judging by how clean it is, and the traces of sand on it here and there, I'm thinking it might be a beach find, rather than a result of hunting.
