Today is garbage pickup day, and when I was out walking Shadow just now, I saw this black-tailed deer skull sitting on a pile of trash bags in front of a neighbor's house.

What a great find, and what a travesty to throw out something like that: I'd have at least left it among the bracken in the woods rather than commit it to a landfill.

My brother found a partial fawn in the woods next door, and was I ever pissed when I heard he tossed it in the trash in a bag :o' We have a deer skeleton returning to the soil out in our back yard, hidden mostly now by ground covering vines and fallen leaves.

I'm beginning to think that I shouldn't keep it; like it would be bad karma for me. Perhaps I should return it to the earth, as well...

Therein lies the question of faith and belief- was this a gift for you to keep as a treasure, or were you led to it in order to return it to 'nature?' I have an antler I found that was shed by a young buck, a 'gift' of sorts that convinced me I should have Bambi on Blu-ray (and a player).

I also had a human skull that I somehow acquired at URI, but it creeped me out and I passed it along to someone else...

Good luck ;o) Any decision will be the correct one, I believe.

ahhh it's gorgeous
It's so beautifully preserved too. I collect a lot of skull replicas and yeah why anyone would throw that away is beyond me.

Oh man I wish I could find something like this. I am always on the lookout, I have some sheds but nothing this nice. Congrats!

I spoke to the neighbor yesterday. The skull wasn't just something he found. He shot the deer. Knowing that, I don't believe I can keep it. The right thing to do would be to take the skull back to the forest where the buck lived, and give his remains a proper burial, so the poor slain victim can be at peace.

Looking at the skull I figured it had been bleached or cleaned. Its very sad. In Florida they had a whole shelf of found Key deer skulls some so tiny they fit in your hand. Luckily most of those animals will never again feel any hunting pressure unlike our mainland deer.

Now you can do a proper antler dance.
YouTube shows this most ancient of dances as practiced in England.
