Kayaking Stone Lagoon

This past weekend, Jake and I finally took out the kayaks that my mom and her friend Sylvia gave us. Sylvia bought them, but they didn't like them "because you have to sit too low in them". They are these cute little inflatable jobs from the Sharper Image! One of the reasons we hadn't taken them out sooner was because we lost our pump, and thought ( Read more... )

Kayaking is addictive! I love that low-in-the-water effect: it puts you at eye-level with wildlife. A whole different perspective even than canoes.

But ya gotta watch the wind & tides, and plan accordingly... often you can get them to do most of the work for you. We did a "Ride the Tide" trip on Elkhorn once that was all kinds of awesome! OTOH we did the exact opposite once on the Albion and it was grim... not only difficult, but dangerous.

I m in love with it already! We learned to respect rivers last summer swimming in the Trinity. We both grew up swimming in the ocean so were surprised to find rivers are every bit as powerful, somtimes more. So while we really want to take the kayaks out on the Trinity, we know we better be real comfortable in them first. That's why we're starting out on the lagoons :D Heeheehee

Hah! I grew up on a river (the Rogue), now live next to the ocean... Rivers aren't as scary to me, because they are generally more predictable. For one thing, the water always runs the same direction, and you can tell just by looking at it which way the current is going! Not so with the ocean, which strikes me as both powerful and subtle, and therefore far more dangerous.

Also: No sharks in rivers. :D

Heeheehee! The rivers in L.A. = DON"T GO SWIMMING IN HERE!!!
It's that constant, inexorable flow that surprised us about rivers... and the sheer volume of water constantly pushing downstream. With the ocean, you have those pounding waves, but there is also always that very predictable lull in between that gives you a second to think and plan and recover. Rivers refuse to pause...! The "no sharks" factor is a huge bonus though!
