It wasn't unusual for Kaname to talk in her sleep. Actually it was more uncommon for her to sleep through the entire night silently than it was for her to be mumbling softly to herself. The words themselves, when actually intelligible, were a weird mish mash of advanced sounding technological terms that likely wouldn't have made much more sense if ( Read more... )

Sousuke was, himself, a light sleeper. With the life he'd lead--especially his childhood--he had to be. So it wasn't all that uncommon for him to wake up in the middle of the night to hear his girlfriend mumbling in her sleep. There didn't seem any harm to it, so he'd learned to simply verify that everything was as it should be, and then go back to sleep himself.

Tonight, however, everything was not as it should be. Kaname seemed upset by something, though he had no way of knowing what. After a few moments of waiting to see if she would calm on her own, he climbed out from under the cot where he'd been sleeping and crossed the small space to her bed. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder--he knew from experience that some people had a violent reaction to being woken.

"Kaname?"

Kaname woke with a strangled gasp, one of her hands going to grab at the hand on her shoulder, eyes fluttering open to stare in panic at whatever had woken her. Then recognition dawned in her eyes and she loosened her grip somewhat on Sousuke's hand. Though not entirely, and she still seemed to be holding on to it a bit like one would hold onto a life line as she let out a breath she'd been holding and the dream faded behind her eyelids.

"Sousuke...?"

He nodded. "It's just me. Are you all right?" He was making no attempts to remove himself from her grasp.

"I..." The raw emotional answer on the tip of her tongue was no but she shook her head awkwardly, willing it away. "Yeah... yeah, I think so." She was silent for a moment and then she shifted, sitting up so that she could wrap her arms around him, pulling him into a hug. She wouldn't admit it but at the moment, she needed the reassurance.
