[11/25] Late Sunday Evening, Servant's Quarter's Room 4

Nov 26, 2007 00:04

It wasn't unusual for Kaname to talk in her sleep. Actually it was more uncommon for her to sleep through the entire night silently than it was for her to be mumbling softly to herself. The words themselves, when actually intelligible, were a weird mish mash of advanced sounding technological terms that likely wouldn't have made much more sense if ( Read more... )

Sousuke was, himself, a light sleeper. With the life he'd lead--especially his childhood--he had to be. So it wasn't all that uncommon for him to wake up in the middle of the night to hear his girlfriend mumbling in her sleep. There didn't seem any harm to it, so he'd learned to simply verify that everything was as it should be, and then go back to sleep himself.

Tonight, however, everything was not as it should be. Kaname seemed upset by something, though he had no way of knowing what. After a few moments of waiting to see if she would calm on her own, he climbed out from under the cot where he'd been sleeping and crossed the small space to her bed. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder--he knew from experience that some people had a violent reaction to being woken.

"Kaname?"

Kaname woke with a strangled gasp, one of her hands going to grab at the hand on her shoulder, eyes fluttering open to stare in panic at whatever had woken her. Then recognition dawned in her eyes and she loosened her grip somewhat on Sousuke's hand. Though not entirely, and she still seemed to be holding on to it a bit like one would hold onto a life line as she let out a breath she'd been holding and the dream faded behind her eyelids.

"Sousuke...?"

He nodded. "It's just me. Are you all right?" He was making no attempts to remove himself from her grasp.

"I..." The raw emotional answer on the tip of her tongue was no but she shook her head awkwardly, willing it away. "Yeah... yeah, I think so." She was silent for a moment and then she shifted, sitting up so that she could wrap her arms around him, pulling him into a hug. She wouldn't admit it but at the moment, she needed the reassurance.

He sat down next to her on the bed, letting himself be hugged, and stroked a hand through her hair because he knew from past experience it was something she liked. "You seemed... upset. I wouldn't have woken you otherwise." He knew she needed her sleep.

She relaxed a little as he sat down next to her and moved to lean against him, one hand splayed against his chest. "No, I'm glad you did. I was dreaming..." She frowned, unsure of how to describe her vision. "It... didn't feel like a normal dream."

He let his free hand rest along her back, reassuring, and continued stroking her hair. "You were reciting AS specs in your sleep, although I didn't understand all of it."

"Was I?" Kaname blinked, then frowned, shaking her head. "I don't remember any of it when I wake up," she confided, fist absently closing on the fabric at her fingertips. "It felt kind of like that though. Like one of the visions." She was silent a moment and then. "I hate them," she said quietly.

His arm tightened around her protectively, remembering the Whispered girl he'd rescued in Russia, how tortured she'd been. He didn't really know much about the ability--Tessa seemed to have her own talent under control--but hearing Kaname talk about it made something twist angrily inside him. And this wasn't an enemy he could fight for her. "I wish there were something I could do for you," he replied.

Kaname blinked up at him, smiling faintly. "You do plenty by just being here with me," she assured him, reaching up absently to touch his cheek.

"Still..." He trailed off for a moment. "It's something that upsets you, and there's nothing I can do about it. It's... frustrating," he admitted.

Kaname stared up at him for a moment or two. Then she tilted her head back for a brief brush of lips against his. "Not directly," she acceded softly. "But you're here for me now and that's enough." She snuggled a bit closer, eyes closing. "That means a lot to me," she murmured.

She may have felt it was enough, but that didn't really make him feel any better about the situation. He settled for simply holding her, for the time being.

Kaname quite enjoyed being held. The boy was very good at doing the holding. It should have been much of a surprise then that time found her drifting off to sleep in his arms.

Sousuke smiled a little to himself when he realized she'd fallen asleep, and shifted to lay her down on the bed, careful not to disturb her as he curled up next to her and went back to sleep himself.
