In re: Fandom

So, you'd think I'd be used to this by now.  This whole fandom weirdness.  How it's supposed to be fun, but is only about half of the time.
This is the problem, being the fan of a musician who didn't come up through conventional channels.  You have all these people who don't understand how music works, or how to be a music fan.  There's a ( Read more... )

You posted! I miss you on my flist.

Anyway, are you referring to the Archie/Cook war-that's-not-really-a-war?

I've never gotten that either. Considering Cook's always been terribly sweet and nice toward Archie's fans, with no real reason to be considering how hideous they've been toward him. I have maybe one song of Archie's on my Itunes, and while I like him and think he's sweet and everything I refuse to buy his record. Because of his fans. . Petty and mean as it is, that's how I feel.

What I'm actually bitching about (and I forget that there are people who read my LJ posts and I was vaguing it up) is this weird hatred of his band. I was over on DCO and it exploded (as it does sometimes) into this whole, "it's all about David and his band is lucky that he deigned to take them with him on his journey of awesomeness. And David is a solo artist and I'm so tired of hearing about MWK, and they weren't that good anyway; they were total unknowns before David, and David is the second coming, and hacks are lucky he's their friend, blah blah blah." (I'm exaggerating a little bit, but not that much). It happens if there's too much positivity about Andy and Neal. And the vitriol directed at Andy is so horrible. I love all these guys and it just really hurts me when people talk about them like that, because I'm a giant nerd, apparently. It's like they think that positivity about the band undermines David. But what I don't get is David so clearly considers himself in a band, and so clearly loves these guys to death. Why bash the ( ... )

No I didn't get into it with them. It's stupid. But one of the coolest posters over there, one of the few people worth going over there to read was so hurt she's like, I have to step away, which breaks my heart.
I just hate that so many people want to tear down, you know? Tear down something they allegedly love.
Also where did you get the photo your icon came from, or the icon itself? I *need* to see the full pic of that. I need to know exactly what was happening at that moment and why Neal was smiling!! I love it when Neal smiles, so I must always know what causes it! My preference is that it's Dave, but I have accepted that there are other forces that have the ability to make Neal smile.
I wish Musikfest would get here already myself!! Can't wait.

Vent away! This is *such* a sore spot for me as well. There are still these people who insist that David is a solo artist. Which, I guess all these interviews where he says "We" he's referring to, like, the Royal We? Like he thinkgs he's the fucking King of England or something? Or he suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder and just wants to include all his personalities when he talks? And fine, I get that at the moment he's marketed as a solo artist. But if you think that in his heart and head he thinks he's a solo artist, well, you are kind of a little bit of a moron. And seriously, if you can not feel the genuine palpable affection between these people, well then, you are also a bit of a moron. Even if you're stupid and you "can't get into MWK" you should at least be able to objectively recognize that David really needs these guys, both professionally and personally. Why would you think that publicly bashing closest friends and collaborators would make him happy? Or do good by him. No man is an island. It's cliche ( ... )
