Doesn't split pea soup use ham hocks or bacon?

Right, but the "standard" is ham hocks. It wasn't really related to the original post, just my own curiosity. Sorry for the confusion.

Something my grandmother used to make pretty often is green beans and ham with potatoes and onions. I make this every time we have ham. I use fresh or frozen green beans, never canned. I start out with the bone of the ham and make stock from that, and a large chopped onion or two, (depending on the size of your crock pot). Then I remove the bone, add whatever spices I'm using, like pepper and a hint of bay, ham cut in chunks, and half a pot of green beans and cook them a few hours slowly, then add potatoes and cook until soft. It is delicious. My boyfriend calls this "Ham Soup."

I also make split pea soup with ham, or a fresh pea soup with ham. I add onions, summer savory, and pepper, and some bay leaf, and lots of onions, and some carrots. Make sure you rinse those dried peas really well, and soak them a while before cooking. They'll cook up faster and softer.

This sounds wonderful! DH isn't a huge split pea fan, but the last one sounds promising!
