I have a bottle of Mesquite marinade, one of those 30 minute marinades. I was going to use it for chicken, and then have my fiance grill it, but we broke up before we had the chance to do so. Now I'm living on my own, still have the marinade and don't like grilling. LOL. My question is, do you all think it'd be good if I just plopped a couple ( Read more... )

In my experience you just have to try it and see. I've had some taste wonderful and others came out so salty or overspiced I've had to dump the whole thing. My general rule of thumb is the stronger or saltier the marinade the less likely it is to taste good if you put it in the crockpot straight.

I'll do that in the oven, take a glass casserol dish, toss the chicken in, pour some marinade over it and add some water, and bake the chicken for a while. -- again not crock related but it works well.

I don't see an issue on the crock. I'd use less than you would to normally marinade and add some water to dilute.

I think you should definitely NOT use chicken breasts; lean meat like that tends to get really dry in the crock. Chicken thighs, a fatty cut of beef, or roasting pork would go really nicely, though--make BBQ pulled pork! Just get a big hunk of shoulder or rump (should be cheap) and slather it in marinade for the crock! Definitely add extra liquid (cider would work really nicely) or else the sugar in the marinade will burn to your crock. It takes a LOT of elbow grease to get it off if it does.

I have done that, but usually throw in some chicken broth too to dilute the marinade a little. :)

I recently used a Tequila Lime Marinade in the crockpot with chicken breasts. I filled the bottle halfway with water & shook it to get out all of the sauce. So about a cup, I'd guess. It turned out awesome!
