help?

i've had a crock-pot for about three years and have tried a (not overly large) variety of recipes and cooking experiments with it. unfortunately, the only thing i've managed to make that tastes good is chili and a beef bourguignon that is just ok.

i'm a good cook (or so my friends and family tell me), and i've gotten frustrated with my inability to use this supposably simple appliance to make a decent meal. i was going to give up and sell it at a yard sale, but i've recently started a job that involves working evenings till 9pm several nights a week. my somewhat good eating habits have turned into frozen dinners and omletes because its too late to make anything good when i get off work. which got me thinking - maybe if i could figure out this crock-pot thing, i could provide myself and my family with a decent meal at least one of those nights when i work late - even if we do eat at different times.

so early this morning i set up the crock-pot with a seemingly simple pot roast recipe. it was to cook for 9-10 hours on low, and i ended up taking it out ...

*light bulb*

ok. i see my problem. i can't do basic math that early in the morning. i cooked it for 10 and a half hours. when i meant to check on it at 8 or 9 hours. doh!

still, this hasn't been my only crock-pot failure (and i'm sure those weren't time related). does anyone have a favorite web site or cookbook that has a good set of tips for using a crock pot (other than learning how to count properly, of course)? i'd really love to figure this thing out.
