'elected to resist'?

At that point the evil overlord laughs, "Elected? What do you think I'm running, a democracy? They were ordered to resist. They were also ordered to kill intruders, for which I am punishing their very souls... bhawhahahahaha! Hey, if a wizard can't count, why should someone important?"

Wow. P'raps the PCs can assuage their senses of guilt at working for an evil mastermind by considering that the quest involved will likely lead to them killing any number of *other* evil masterminds.

Of course, one wonders if the items requested are just a wild-goose-chase mechanism to taunt the party with an unattainable task for the "rescue" of the Elf prisoner, or if they will, in fact, assist the villain in achieving some overarching scheme.

Also, the PC wizard's tone reeks of rationalization. Sounds like he's killed a number of otherwise innocent people. I wonder at the party's overall alignment. What does the Paladin of the party think?

Oh, they intend to attack almost as soon as the elf is safe.

Good choice of words, "Almost."

As for "rationalization" I'm not sure how you could say any of them were innocent. They did, after all, attack us first.

Oh, and this is clearly a wild goose chase or assisting him in an overarching scheme. The only reason we are assisting? "All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near." -- Sun Tzu
