To those of you who'd made a trip back here, what was it, nearly a year ago, this place you've suddenly found yourself in will be looking very familiar.
The layout of the town is exactly like Mayfield, just as it had been exactly like Mayfield back in Westport. But the ruins of the town are a perfect mirror to the destruction Westport had been in.
City Hall and the police station are gone, with only rubble and burnt out shells to mark where they stood. The streets around there are sealed off with heavy barricades made of rubble and doors and household furniture, broken glass and barbed wire.
Walk a few blocks past the trenches. The buildings and homes nearest the barricaded streets are scarred with burn marks and bullet holes and broken glass. The homes are boarded up, the windows shuttered and draped in blackout curtains. As you walk, the scars become fewer; homes in the center of town appear almost normal.
Not everything is quite the same. Street signs are missing on the streets you'll travel on, leaving nothing to distinguish them from Mayfield aside from the rubble and barricades. The shops in the center of town have fallen into worse disrepair. A few empty, boarded up, bullet hole ridden frames remain, but most of the downtown and uptown area is nothing but rubble. The lot where the church once stood is empty now, save for a scorched black outline of a building on the ground.
Inside homes, molding and decayed food has been left on the tables, but there is no living person, plant, or animal to be found anywhere. The air is breathable, however, and the strange men in hazmat suits are nowhere to be found.
It looks just like Westport, but something is different somehow. Is it the quiet in the clear, breathable air? There's nothing foreboding hanging over this town.
