Lloyd Alexander's The Book of Three.
I still remember reading

How I loved Lloyd Alexander, I cannot begin to count the ways, but I can count the books of his I loved and they will be here forever.

The only consolation is that he had a long productive life and was much appreciated during his lifetime.
