After last week I was very ready for a softer, slower-paced episode, and this was it. It still had action and tension and angst, but not as much, and I love-love-loved the backstory. The seduction scene was very hot, and Angelo's betrayal was heartbreaking

Apparently a couple of the writers said at ComicCon that the love interest here was pre-Ianto - though why that needed to be said I don't know. However, it's not at all convincing that it could have been Jack on the slow, linear path. He just didn't look like that then, and where would he have got the WWII coat from?
I can understand Gwen completely. She knows Jack - probably better than anyone else except the Doctor at this stage. She knows that, even though he loves her and would do anything to protect her if it were possible, he also wouldn't think twice about lying to her, deceiving her and even manipulating her if it were in his interests. She's seen him do it

Oh I have no doubt he would've given himself up for them if she'd gone to him for help rather than just tazering him and tying him up. There's a big difference between being a willing sacrifice and being a lamb led to the slaughter

Man, poor Jack. It seems like everyone he loves betrays him, sooner or later. It is always his story. And the worst part is that he feels that he deserves it. I need to watch this episode again, ASAP.

He says his last confession was 700 years ago, but that could be a simple jaunt to the 14th century, not his personal timeline.
