After last week I was very ready for a softer, slower-paced episode, and this was it. It still had action and tension and angst, but not as much, and I love-love-loved the backstory. The seduction scene was very hot, and Angelo's betrayal was heartbreaking
( ... )
I really don't think this is Jack in his first run through the early 20th century - and if it is, they've written it very badly. Jack did not look like this - the short, spiky hair, the blue shirt, the braces and the WWII coat - in the scenes from the early 20th century we saw in TWS2. He didn't know he was a fixed point.
I saw on your LJ that some of the series writers say this is pre-Ianto, but I still don't believe that it's early Jack. Hope they sort it out for us!
The backstory was excellent, wasn't it? And Angelo's betrayal was all the more shocking because I didn't expect it. I really thought that either he'd die or Jack would leave him behind.
You may be right about the three men, and somehow Angelo has to be in there too. Well spotted re. the blessing!
As for Jack's timeline, I am inclined to believe that this is relatively recent for him. The way he was dressed was a huge clue. We saw bits of his timeline in TW S2, and he did not look or dress like this in the early parts of the twentieth century. Also, he tells the Doctor he was shot on Ellis Island, but he's not shot in this version of events.
All the same, I think anyone trying to make sense of Jack's timeline is fighting a losing battle. He lies almost as much as the Doctor when it comes to his past *g*

He says his last confession was 700 years ago, but that could be a simple jaunt to the 14th century, not his personal timeline.
