One part I found interesting from a character point of view was the scene with Jack in the surgical room with the assassin who exploded. He suggests chopping off his head, which seems pretty cold but of course Jack knows the downside of immortality and how putting an end to his misery might be a blessing. The reaction shot to his face after they cut his head off was interesting. He clearly wasn't as shocked as everyone else in the room, but it affected him. He's been there. I just feel like Jack has a completely different perspective on the situation than any other character.

Jack has a completely different perspective on the situation than any other character.

I was thinking that too, especially as we saw the obvious signs of reanimation under the sheet: my mind flashed right back to Jack 'regrowing' from the piece of his arm after the bomb, and having awareness return even before his skin had regrown. It was pretty obvious that he empathised with the assassin there.

So many little details to love in this episode!

I'm probably gonna get beat up for this, but after having just watched all 3 seasons of Torchwood on a hardcore marathon to get caught up in time for the premiere (woo, netflix!) I'm actually gonna disagree with you here say that I think Torchwood is a better show than Doctor Who. (Granted, I'm not completely caught up on DW yet--still haven't seen the last two episodes of season 2 or anything after it even though I know what happens ( ... )

Well, it's all about personal preferences. To me, TW was very hit and miss in the first two seasons. Some good episodes, some truly awful ones, lots of inconsistent writing, and in all not something I'd rewatch over and over for fun. (Didn't help that I couldn't stand Ianto; I'm happy he's no longer around). CoE was the beginning of making Torchwood into something really worth watching - previously I only watched for Jack.

Whereas I simply love most of Nine and Ten's runs on New Who, and if given the choice between a Torchwood S1-3 episode or almost any of DW S 1-4 episodes, it'd be DW every time :)

Miracle Day, though, is in a different category altogether.

I can definitely understand that. And you're right, it's absolutely a matter of personal preferences. :)

I thought the episode was hilariously explosion-heavy. But that whole subject aside, I really like what they're doing with Gwen. She's living in anxious paranoia, half hoping something does go wrong so she has an excuse to DO something that matters. She cries mid-episode because, even though she had nothing to do with anything that had happened, she still feels so responsible. And when Jack appears? "Eeee! Torchwood time! Saddle up! Where's the bazooka?"

Short version: Once an Action Girl, always an Action Girl.

Oh, yes. I did think that despite Gwen's apparent desire to live a quiet life she was very quick to reach for the weapons, and very comfortable getting that gun loaded and ready to fire.

I also really liked her country-mother look, much better than her bad-ass all-dressed-in-black-and-leathers action girl look in previous seasons *g*

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed them taking liberties with their big fancy new budget. ;)

The whole archives action sequence cracked me up. Running from an explosion by jumping out a window, landing in a fountain? What is this, Face Off?

I finally saw it last night and it was a really strong opening episode. They've done a good job balancing the new characters with the old (I was worried about that) and with getting into the story with a bang.

Definitely intrigued by Jack's ability to get injured. Does this mean he's no longer immortal? Or is this all part of the bigger picture. I can't wait to find out.

Gwen was SUPER kick ass in this episode, so was Rhys. I like that they seem to be utilizing him as a main character now. Should be interesting to watch it all play out.

Can we have more yet?

Much as I loved CoE, I thought this was the best Torchwood episode yet. As you say, the balance of the continuing and the new is very well done, and I thought the pacing was excellent too.

Jack's condition was well-trailed in advance publicity, but I won't comment on it if you're not aware of it. Suffice to say that it's going to be a fascinating storyline, and I'm intrigued to see how it is resolved in terms of the characters' stories after Miracle Day.

Yes! I agree. This was definitely the best TW ep to date. And I agree with you on the pacing.

I am actually pretty much completely spoiler free on this series - barely even saw any trailers, and I'm enjoying being surprised. The only thing I really knew in advance was that the main premise was that no one can die. I find the idea of that fascinating and can't wait to see how it all pans out.
