I get the feeling that it's a rite of passage for amigurumi makers to create an elephant at some point. Am I alone in this thought? I'm not complaining, it just seems to be an odd pattern...
Funny you should ask, but I got an email today stating Lily Sugar n Cream was now available in scented varieties. Perhaps you got some of the new stuff?
As for the callouses, use a strong hand cream after crocheting.
Nope, this is the plain old SnC non-scented version that I've had sitting in my stash for a few weeks. It doesn't exactly smell like something I think they'd market as a scent either, haha.
and thanks for the tip, I have some hand lotion sitting around that I'll start using more :)
Hand lotion is my remedy too. It can be rough on the hands. I've had yarn balls smell a bit off at first- various yarn, too. I'm not sure why- generally it goes away quickly. Funny about the elephant- my roommate's been bugging me to make her an elephant in this hot pink yarn... I am slightly intimidated but daring myself to attempt it.
Oh, he's so cute! I think you're right about elephants! We all make 'em! :o) We should do a post where everyone links to their elephants! heh heh

I think it was this single batch/shade, I'm working with one of their (newer) denim shades and it doesn't have the same smell. The other colors, which I bought around the same time, don't smell either.
I don't usually wash the yarn before I use it, mostly because as of right now I'm only making things for my own personal use and don't worry a whole lot about cleanliness. Since I'm starting to make gifts I have to get into the habit since I have a little furry white critic that likes to have his belly rubbed as I'm crocheting, and I don't think those that are allergic to dogs would appreciate his contributions :p
The hand lotion I've been using seems to get the job done, the only issue is that the scent is really strong and it smells exactly like candy. I'll have to try the grapeseed oil once the lotion runs out (or I get sick of it) and see how that works. :D
