I get the feeling that it's a rite of passage for amigurumi makers to create an elephant at some point. Am I alone in this thought? I'm not complaining, it just seems to be an odd pattern...
Oh, he's so cute! I think you're right about elephants! We all make 'em! :o) We should do a post where everyone links to their elephants! heh heh
Gosh, I haven't ever experienced that problem with Sugar n Cream. (cool project idea, by the way! Please post it when you're done?) Maybe it was a bad batch? Not washed enough? It might be the smell of the dye if it wasn't rinsed enough after dying. I've had that with some yarns, though not Sugar n Cream. Maybe try buying another ball from another store and see how it is?
There are methods of deodorizing things that you can try. Check the net for ideas. Also, you can wash the yarn before using it, of course. A lot of work though.
RE: finger owies from crocheting (and knitting) - I've experienced that of course, like most of us, if you do any significant amount of it. Haven't found a really good solution, other than making sure to moisturize. I use a drop or two of grapeseed oil with several drops of water in my palm, then moistureize face and hands. That seems to prevent the drying and cracking I was getting on my fingers from all the yarn handling. When I'm working with especially pointy needles, I have to put bandaids or something, as you are doing, because I tend to push the point of the left hand needle to advance the yarn.
I've heard of folks using the tips cut off of the fingers of rubber gloves with success, but I didn't like it, myself.
I think it was this single batch/shade, I'm working with one of their (newer) denim shades and it doesn't have the same smell. The other colors, which I bought around the same time, don't smell either.
I don't usually wash the yarn before I use it, mostly because as of right now I'm only making things for my own personal use and don't worry a whole lot about cleanliness. Since I'm starting to make gifts I have to get into the habit since I have a little furry white critic that likes to have his belly rubbed as I'm crocheting, and I don't think those that are allergic to dogs would appreciate his contributions :p
The hand lotion I've been using seems to get the job done, the only issue is that the scent is really strong and it smells exactly like candy. I'll have to try the grapeseed oil once the lotion runs out (or I get sick of it) and see how that works. :D

Good Luck! :o)
