little kitty cat girl

This was a one day project this weekend for my wife's niece's first birthday. I had planned on making a little dress with the number 1 on it, with the idea that she'd get a little numbered doll each birthday, but didn't have enough time. Ahh, procrastination, my wrists are thanking you now ( Read more... )

I think as a kid getting a kitty outfitted doll with a matching kitty hat would be a beyond awesome gift!!

She's a bit young (1) to grasp it, but it's something I hope she enjoys as she gets older, especially as her matching hat/doll collection grows (I already have a few more ideas for the following years and will not procrastinate!). Her mom did like the hat the first time around, so that made me happy. :)

are you kidding? When she hits around my age (mid 20s or so) she'll be looking at pictures and I'm sure it'll make her smile!

Little stuff like that in pictures always makes me happy, now.

And that hat is super cute! I'd love to know if you came up with that off the cuff or a pattern. The ears are fantastic looking!

Thanks! I made the hat from a combination of hat patterns that I had used to practice knitting in the round. I think there's a kitty hat in the Stitch'n'Bitch book and there's also a nice base hat pattern available for free called the Thorpe Hat (Googling it will get you several hits). I came up with a specific pattern for this hat to get the exact size I wanted. Actually, it would be nice if I wrote down what I did, so here it is if you're interested. Let me know if you have any questions, I think this is my first time writing down a knitting pattern, so it might be confusing.

For the hat:
Her measurements were approximately 20" around her head and 12" from ear to ear over the top of her head, so I wanted the height of the hat to be ~14" so that it'd cover her ears a bit.

My gauge using worsted weight yarn and size 8/5.0mm DPNs was 5 sts/inch and between 5.5 and 6 rows/inch. Since I planned to do a k2p2 rib I want the number of stitches around the opening of the hat to be a multiple of 4 stitches.
  • 5 sts/inch x 20" = 100 sts, which ( ... )

Thanks! Even though I killed my wrists making it in a hurry, I was happy with the final product. =)

These are super cute! Does the doll look like her at all (hair color/eye color)? This is a great idea. I be she loved the dolly. :)

Thanks! Yeah, the doll sorta looks like her-light blue eyes & blond hair-though she doesn't have much hair yet. I went with the bangs look because it was easy and I couldn't figure out how to make something that looked like wispy baby hair.
