Watcher of news I am not

I had been meaning to talk about it ever since it happened. But, I kept forgetting or I wanted to wait until they had figured out how bad (ie had the ship finally broken up). You might or mighn't know that a Chinese oil tanker rammed into a section of the Great Barrier Reef last week at full speed. And wow, at that. A lot of ships have been taking ( Read more... )

I heard about the reef thing, it sucks so badly. :( All that natural beauty and wildlife. D:

I didn't even know they still played God Save the Queen anywhere in Australia anymore, it does seem a bit imperialistic really. I can't really say whether it's a good or a bad thing to drop it or not, it's up to you guys obviously. But I hope we'll always stay connected to you in some ways, not in an imperial way, but as you say in terms of diplomatic relations and historical terms. Britain is closer to Australia and New Zealand than we are to America in many cultural ways, as we are to Canada as well.

I think Australians can get knighted? Kylie got an OBE (Order of the British Empire), so I think it's possible, because you're part of the Commonwealth.

I heard about the reef thing, it sucks so badly. :( Uh huh! *nods*

It does, but its not like we play it at every 'event'. Its just ANZAC Day (I think...I don't get out much. >_>).
Yep, well, Britain is always going to have that history with all the Commenwealth countries be it good or bad. But I just thought it seemed rather ignorant to take it out completely if students here aren't even learning about the British side of the war in school say ages 5-12 years old. Its a different way of teaching people.

Yeah, I was thinking of Kylie. :P

Not only were the 9 miles off the channel where they were supposed to be, channel in question is 10 miles wide! It's not that tricky to stay in there!

I have no idea whether God Save The Queen is still played at Canberra things, I don't even remember singing the National Anthem at the one I went to in first year, but this year I'm going to the Dawn Service so maybe it will be different.

No, I havent heard of the reef accident but that's awful :(

We don't have that many British TV here - most of the shows are American. I love Poirot the TV series and I wish there're more! And oh, I'm also watching Primeval.

It is awful, they have the boat away from the shoal now. But the damage has been done, though they were preparing for the ship breaking apart since it was damaged and *MAJOR* ruin. But its looking safer right now. The paint from the boat wrecked things too...

Ah Poirot and Agatha Christies Miss Marple, *sigh* now that's sentimental British stuff. :P PRIMEVAL! Ooh I really liked season 1 I can't remember if I saw season 2 before they stopped airing it here...surprisingly on a channel that wasn't known for airing British shows!
